This.
Dipping into the top-end of the UFA pool has gotten them into nothing but trouble -- Bryz, Vinny, Briere, etc. There's going to be more Schultz's and MDZ's out there this summer... target them, instead of some guys they'll end up having to buy out sooner or later. - Tomahawk
The key, for now, has to be to avoid the general overpayment, or maybe especially the "paying market value" that ends up being spun as "in a year or two, when the cap goes up, his deal will look OK".
It's not the $8mm Giroux deal, the $4.1mm Mason deal, the $5.25mm Streit deal that has the Flyers tip toeing the cap. It's paying $4.5mm for an oft-scratched 4th line RW, $4.5mm for an unproductive veteran 3rd line LW, $3.6mm for an inconsistent third pair defenseman or $3.5mm for an injury prone stay at home 4-5 guy or $5mm for a solid 4-5 defenseman that has seen a string of healthy scratches.
That's $21.1mm against the cap for guys who are, in most cases, playing at replacement level or worse. Even MacDonald, who has been solid in his secondary role, is overpaid for it right now, even if the deal won't look bad in a year or two. I want more deals like Wayne Simmonds or Jake Voracek-ones that looked good from the get go and remain good looking.
As for bargains working out, in the cases of MDZ and Schultz, they were guys who played at a fairly high level and had a bad year or bad situation. Guys like Kurtis Foster and Bruno Gervais were never really that good to begin with or suffered serious injuries that limited their abilities. |

yeah. its more about just finding the right player.
if they could get boychuk for 6.5, and move schenn/grossmann, it would require some more maneuvering elsewhere, but i dont necessarily think its just blowing money. - stayinthefnnet
Hextall talked about it today. There needs to be a continuous cycle between the young and the old. As key players get older, you want younger players growing into taking a bigger bite, to take some of the weight as those players move past their prime. A player like Streit has two more years left after this one, which is perfect as other players transition onto the team. Flyers have key players that in their prime. It would be a shame to waste those years. There is no such thing as a bad method of acquiring players. The key is to get the right players. Build through the draft, and develop players, and supplement through trades and free agency. I'm not interested in winning the most dollars under the cap cup!

you know what is the most exciting thing about all this is?
I really think Hexy gets it, and has what it takes to build a great team in this (stupidly) capped league |

yeah. they just need to be selective.
dont take a guy just because he is there, or even if he is the best guy on the market available. take him because you genuinely believe he is the right guy for what you need.
i'm big on not wasting 3 or 4 prime years as well. it is a tricky thing though, to attempt to juggle the two approaches at once. ultimately, i still think its the way that has to be taken though. |

That's not really reality in the NHL. There is going to be some level of players that are perceived as overpaid. Players on good deals that are really underpaid such as Simmonds and Voracek, are what balances it out. The Flyers have two problem contracts, which are Lecavalier and Umberger. There is going to be some form of hurt there in dealing with those players at some point. The rest are not a problem. The cap is not a big problem. It all overblown. There is really one serious problem, and one only. That's figuring out how to get the defense to catch up to the forwards on this team, without wasting 3 years or more of the prime years of their best players. Everything else is minor compared to that.

You take that way if it can't be avoided. Don't sign the guy if you don't think he fills the need. But don't pass him up because Bryzgalov didn't work out in the past either. That's silly.

My brothers both think he's really good, but coming off an injury. The older one said he wasn't surprised at it. |
