coburn and kimmo were a great partnership, for many seasons
both gone now - Marc D
Yeah, 5 years removed from the Stanley Cup Final, only one dude left from that team |

I think the NYRs getting Yandle pushed Yzerman into getting a D man
both NY and Tampa now have pretty damn good D going into the playoffs
the Flyers got a nice return on Kimmo and Coburn but both were quality. I guess we may have to wait till the draft to see the lesser players dealt |

Awesome. Just to good a return to pass up. Do we know the years on these picks? |

2015. If Tampa misses playoffs and wins top pick, Flyers get Rangers 1st rounder, but either way, they have two 1st rounders in 2015. Now have at least 1 pick in every round, two each in 1st & 3rd |

I really wonder what the defense will look like next year
Have a feeling more changes are coming |

My guess is Hexy saw the prices being paid and said "Screw it", put the For Sale sign on the lawn and grabbed his gold blazer |

Thanks for draft info. Love getting two more picks in this years draft. Picking up Schultz and Del Zotto in the off season made the recent Dmen deals for picks possible. Sweet! |

Because people pay, at this time of year. If they think they can win, people will pay, and they always will
Yzerman knew that he was holding two pairs against the straight that the Rags drew today, wasn't even sure he could beat Montreal with it, off the flop
Had to do something |

Always knew Coburn was worth a first, wasn't sure he could pull another asset, let alone another one in an NHL-caliber defenseman, though Gudas is strictly bottom pair
But Gudas and Luke Schenn are the same player, in essence. Can't believe both are sticking around |

He may be more of a 7th guy they dress when truculence is needed
Not sure he is very good at actual hockey
hits like a freight train though |

Definitely a hard hitter, can throw 'em too
Don't know how bad the knee is, but when I watched him play before he got hurt, his footwork was better than Schenn's
They are so close to being the same player, it is hard for me to see how both stay when Gudas is healthy

they are both right handed too!
Gudas has a better beard
plus he is another Czech from Kladno, and they have had some success here |

I doubt they will be ... Supposedly Gudas isn't going to be playing this year anyway ... hopefully bigger and brighter things in the future for our Flyers! |

It's a good package, three assets for one, including a roster player and a first. I really like Coburn, but that is just too much to pass up |

I swear, if Gudas wasn't hurt, I'd be making a hockey deal for the Schenns today
Gotta wonder if that shoe drops at the draft |

Or maybe tomorrow? ... actually I doubt it since Grosmann isn't 100% either ... they would be really lacking toughness on the defense if they traded L.Schenn right now ... but i hope they do! |

I think they will miss Coburn, at least in the short term, more than many folks think, but this is still a great trade for a rebuilding team. |

Agreed! Hextall has got some good assets. He's traded some solid players. The challenge today is to try and free up cap space finding a home for some of these bad contracts. |

I have no doubt they are going to miss him. No doubts at all
But we've all said this periodically, because it's obvious, and I am honest enough to admit what I'm seeing: That roster needs an infusion of pure, straight-up talent
Guys who can skate, pass, handle a puck under pressure, shoot and score and think the game, preferably with some size
If they are lucky, defensemen are coming. But the forwards...man, they need to throw some picks at it, looking for some high-end skill
I hate that Coburn and Timonen are gone. I really do. They were loyal soldiers who I wanted to see win here
But Timonen isn't coming back next year, and he and Coburn netted five assets, including first and second-rounders
Sometimes, you just gotta tip your cap to the guys who did their best and then get back to work and try to improve for the future

Let's put it this way. The Flyers had every opportunity to make a playoff push the last month or so and blew it almost every time. Thank goodness they have a gm that sticks with a plan. They were going to have pretty much the same roster as this year, next year if no trades took place, and they'd be pretty close to where they are right now again. Get rid of a couple other bad contracts, and the future is looking bright again.
I'd rather watch a team rebuild than fart along for most of the season aimlessly.
edit: i'm all in baby |
