But again: They got Kevin Hayes for free

Stepan's an '08, Brassard's an '06, Kreider and JT Miller are both as young, or younger, as Couturier and Schenn

McDonagh's an '07 -- he's the same age as Jake

Their good players are as young as ours, or younger -- would you rather have Kreider or Baby Schenn?

The narrative that they can't withstand losing picks would only matter if they're old, which they most definitely are not

- AllInForFlyers

It's true, but a 3 year gap in top prospects can be a killer. The Flyers went 2 or 3 years and only got away with it really cause they traded their captain and their top scorer for picks and prospects.

This might trickle down if they aren't careful. When your youth gets older, you have to pay them more. It costs a lot more to keep an older core together than a younger core. If you don't have the prospects to shift into your core, it may have an impact on your position depth.

I totally understand the concern, but in this particular case, I think it's overblown, because they are as young as they are, especially on the back end

Can't say I do. The Rags are better than they were yesterday. I kept reading the asking price for Yandle was through the roof. If the Rags are in top half of NHL next year which I'm sure they will be, the pick will be at end of first round. The Rags back end now is loaded and young.

Why wouldn't you? They were already good

Those boys are gonna be (frank)ing good for the next five years, health permitting

Why is every team that builds through the draft suddenly compared to Edmonton?

don't worry. half of them will suffer season ending injuries in training camp.

Has the nameplate on Grossmans jersey recovered from being hit? I sure hope this doesn't effect him being moved tomorrow

Smartest thing Slats ever did was not let Ryan Callahan sucker him into overpaying, then not being afraid to let Anton Stralman walk

Not only did they make the Cup final without Callahan, that cash is coming in handy

They have a good chance for sure.

Never was a believer in Nash, but lets see if he proves me wrong in the playoffs.

That's what pisses you off about the deal, they have young core players that you would think they'd have to cough up in a deal like this.
And why would Arizona retain 1/2 the salary?

There's also the problem that, once Yandle needs an extention, they'll probably be paying their defense half of the cap limit.

The #coyotes now have two first-round picks in 2015, two in 2016, Domi and Duclair. Decent shot at landing McDavid or Eichel, too.

Along with a young, #1 dman. They may have a brighter future than the Flyers

- PhillySportsGuy

Just glad Duclair is out of the division. Was not looking forward to him turning the likes of Nik, Luke and Pronger Jr. for years.

On the other hand, you could call it poor management. There's evidence that Stralman is playing at the same level as Yandle this year. You could argue that they just gave up top assets for an equally good defenseman.

You can pay the defense half when it's good

McDonagh, Staal, Girardi, Yandle, Boyle and Klein...that's about as good as it gets, my friend

They will have to make sure they don't neglect the wings, but they do already have Nash and Kreider and Stepan, Brassard and JT Miller down the middle can do some things already and Miller might get better

If they end up paying Yandle 7 mil, they'll be paying a bit more than 37 mil on what will probably be around a 75 mil cap.

EDIT: that'll leave an average of about 3 mil for each of 12 forwards.
EDITEDIT: once you count Nash and Brassard, that's about 2.5 mil for each of 10 forwards.

He has been for years now

He won't overpay, but he has found ways to bring in Gaborik, then sell him at peak value, while acquiring Nash for decent players but no stars

That guy has been on fire for at least four years now

I don't know.
My only point is that loads of first round picks in consecutive years is a guarantee of...nothing. And the odds of being able to pay them all their market worth when they come of age are extremely low.

- Scoob

Lol. So the Coyotes should just quit?

I know. In 3-5 years when the Flyers are contending, people will be glad the Pens and Rags sold their future when the Flyers weren't real contenders

They would have to move another piece out on the backend before that.
Never saw this coming with the Zuccarello situation.
I have a feeling they aren't done.

I disagree with comparing Stralman to Yandle, mainly because Stralman, while good, is a third-pairing player on a good team

There's a reason why Tampa's looking for a defenseman

Yandle drives play. He's a better player than Stralman, I feel

Ya, that's a vicious defense.
