What player plays every game over 95% of every game, and by themselves, can completely dictate a game with regularity? If in any sport you had a position that held that much responsibility I think you would probably consider it the most important position, yes?

Having the best player in the most important position is why teams win cups, not because they try to outscore everyone and forego all defense.

Every year cup favorites fall and almost every time you read and hear, "if they only had better goal tending, they could have done it." Please see SJ Sharks for the last decade and MAF for prime examples.
