Good trade for both teams.

What a joke, terrible trade for Florida. 2 points out of a playoff spot with Ekblad and Barkov only 19 years old and Hubby and Bujstad 21 years old. Crazy to trade any of them; Yes Florid needs a sniper with 12 losses in shootouts but with any maturity at all these Panthers are contenders for years to come, no blockbuster deal can make any sense at this point

Like Edmonton? Or Florida?

It works on paper... but doesn't mean it works in real life...

- Hockey_Reverend

Edmonton hasn't built properly, they have a bunch of top end talent but haven't surrounded them with the right players...but they now have the assets to do that if they wish to. Thats what its all about. Edmonton will be fine if they make the right moves, and they will be a cup contender in 2-3 years. Yes, its taken a lot longer than expected but they are still on the right track. Same for Florida... in some cases it takes longer than expected to complete the re-build but none the less they are definitely on the right track.

Look at all the teams who have build out of the draft and are legit cup contenders: Chicago, St.Louis, Pittsburg, Tampa, NYI, LA... and there are many up and coming teams. The only way to do it properly is finish in the bottom for 2-3 years and get your 2-3 franchise building blocks, after that the rest is up to good scouting and steals in the later rounds in the draft and making smart trades/free agent signings to build around your core players.

I think that this may be a very good start for a deal but I think that the leafs need to put more into the deal.

Realistically the deal would need to look something like:

To FLA: Kessel, Robidas, Van Riemsdyk (can FLA handle the $$? Maybe Toronto retains 2Mill of Kessels contract for first 2 years?)

To Toronto: Huberdeau, 2015 1st round Pick, Bergenheim, Brandon Pirri

Florida would be getting 2 big time forwards that can get 70+point season on a good team no problem and a depth Defencemen to help they're younger D and push for a playoff spot. Everyone Keep in mind that Florida needs to start making playoff appearances and start winning NOW. They have a really hard time filling the seats at they're home games and a huge deal like this would only help.

Toronto is going into a re-build and what a great way to start by acquiring a potential first line centre in Huberdeau, a 2015 1st round pick in a DEEP draft and a player in Brandon Pirri that could be a good solid 3rd line guy down the road. Sean Bergenheim will finish the season with Toronto and then likely hit the free agent market and sign somewhere else.

For everyone that thinks Toronto is giving up too much, trust me this is a deal Toronto fans should take and run. With Kessel and JVR out of the lineup and possibly Lupul, Phaneuf(in the summer) and others departing the leafs will be finishing in the bottom almost for sure for the next 2 years thus giving them the elite players that teams need to build around. This is how a cup-contending team is built! Start bringing in pieces that WANT to be here and WANT to compete for that amazing Maple leafs logo on they're chest. It means a lot to be a Maple Leaf and it is a privilege to be apart of this franchise!

Leaf fans imagine these pieces that we can build around in the future:

Morgan Reilly, Jon Huberdeau, William Nylander, Stuart Pery, Matt Finn, Josh Leivo, Connor Brown, Andreas Johnson, Brendan Leipsic, Rinat Valiev, Dominic Toninato, Maybe Jake Gardiner?... These are some really good pieces that we can start to build around. In 2-3 years these players will have come a LONG way.

Now we get the the 2015 draft: if we end up with the 5th pick we have the chance to add an elite prospect in Dylan Strome, Mitchell Marner or Ivan Provorov, maybe Noah Hanifin?

If we make the trade with Florida and end up with a pick around 15-18 then we have a chance to draft a guy like Matt Barzal, and wow this kid looks like he is going to be something special.

We also have Nashvilles first round pick, which depending on how they do in the playoffs could realistically be a 20-25th pick in the draft... If I were the leafs I would look to add the top goalie in the draft named Mackenzie Blackwood(6'4 210 pounds already) from the Barrie Colts of the OHL. Give this kid 3-4 years to develop and he has elite goaltender written all over him.(Sorry fellow leaf fans but Bernier is just to small and this year has given up a lot of bad goals. He is a decent goalie but not one that is going to throw you on his back and steal you games in the playoffs.)

This is just the first round of the 2015 draft Leaf Fans!!! We have at least 2 more years of this to be excited for(In 2016 Austin Matthews and 2017 Nolan Patrick will be Franchise players). Don't be disappointed. Yes, it sucks that we need to watch them lose for 2-3 more years but after that we are going to be on the track to being a CUP CONTENDER, yes a cup contender. To build a cup contender you have to do it right and build out of the draft. Let the rebuild begin...Finally!!

Another salary dump would have to go Toronto's way.

Agreed. I think some depends on who you draft too. Are you getting Stamkos with the first overall, or Taylor Hall (Not a knock on Hall, who's a great player, but not on the same level.

Even Florida who we're discussing now, looks great. Some will bring up they've been bad for a long time. I would say that they didn't rebuild properly at the start and had to do a partial do over. they got some top end draft picks now, and got a mid first steal with Bjugstad.

Honestly I do not want Robidas... but if it's Kessel an Polak Holzer for Huberdeau/Bergy/Campell/1st rd pick.... I think I do it. I wouldn't want to toss in Trocheck, that is giving way too muc.=h.

So let me get this straight. We're trading Kessel, who by himself will get you at least Huberdeau and your 1st round pick, and then adding Van Riemsdyk and Robidas for a salary dump in Bergenheim and a Brandon Pirri who by your own admisssion is a future 3rd liner. Plus we're retaining salary on Kessel's deal???

Right, let's jump all over this one!

If you want Kessel and Van Riemsdyk this is the only way it will happen:

wow that is a lopsided trade for the Panthers. Really, the Leafs are giving up two top 6 forwards? One capable of 60+ points, the other is easily a 30-40 goal scorer, and the Leafs are going to take hopes and dreams in return? Huberdeau has a ton of potential, but super inconsistent so far in his 3 years in the league. Pirri has been a healthy scratch plenty of times this year. His current team struggles to score, so you would think if he was an offensive dynamo, he would be in the lineup, not the press box. You are selling Kessel and JvR way too short, and you could actually maximize your return if you deal them separately from one another. JvR has a favorable contract for a 1st/2nd line winger. Kessel is a top 10 talent in the league. I think the proposed deal in the rumor is pretty decent, I wouldn't say it is truly that lopsided.

You could then flip JvR to another team and pick up a 1st and a prospect since he is signed long-term and still not even at the peak of his career yet.
