Other members of the top two lines can score without Crosby or Malkin being involved. So it's not like you would need all of the scoring outside of Crosby or Malkin to come from the 3rd and 4th lines. But just comparing to the Chicago stats you posted earlier, they got 15 goals from their bottom 6 over the course of the playoffs. Do you honestly believe our current bottom 6 can put up 15 goals over 24ish games? Who outside of Sutter and Downie is getting more than 1? Maybe Spaling if he gets lucky, maybe Bennett, but he rarely scores, he is more of a setup guy. I think you need a goal from your bottom 6 at least every other game, but really at a slightly better pace than that. 3 or 4 goals a series. If we get that from the bottom 6 then, I wouldn't complain and in all likelihood it was our top 6 that let us down if we flamed out. - PensFan1103
The Penguins got 9 goals out of their bottom six in last year's playoffs in 13 games. I'd argue that their bottom six this year is better than last year's.

I'd agree that it is better than last year, however that doesn't mean they are deep enough to win anything either.

slip the difference. trade martin and keep efhoff at the deadline. bring up Dumo and we have 4 mill to acquire a forward(s) with. even if its a ufa... so is martin. |

Lets face it... If we had Maatta, I think we'd be a legit contender. But you can't lose a top 6 winger and top defenseman and just stay a contender. poop happens, apparently a lot more often to us injury wise. |

Maatta and Dupuis aren't injured. Sutter instead of Klinkhammer is traded for Perron. That would be a stacked lineup.

I'm just doing the numbers on most trade proposals. Personally, I don't think we can win this year. If we can get some assets for Martin, shed Sutter for a 3rd line center that is more suitable for us... I believe fully that Rust is ready to come up, and Farn can replace Adams with a bit less suckage.
And our young D in Pouliot and Dumoulin are ready. - Guile
I completely agree with this. I personally would love to retain Martin but at the amount he'd expect and likely get it's not feasible. So based on the way this team has performed against adversity this year I don't see us making it passed the 1st round unless we magically get TB.
I say move Martin and/or Erhoff now get picks and younger FW help, so that we can build up our farm system, maybe even shed Sutter and we will be a much better team going forward. I wouldn't want to lose Martin and Erhoff but I think everyone can agree at least one will be gone and honestly I don't see us making much impact in the playoffs again this year, let's work on retaining Perron & Horn and moving to get deeper and stronger so that we can make a long playoff run next year.
I realize I'm likely to get flamed for this but it's just my opinion. This team is not gelling and I don't see 1 depth forward making that difference. |

Kunitz-Crosby-Hornqvist
Perron-Malkin-Comeau
Dupuis-Spaling-Bennett
Klinkhammer-Goc/Lapierre-Adams/Arcobello
Letang-Martin
Maatta-Ehrhoff
Despres-Scuderi
There isn't a lineup in the league that is grossly outmatching that roster.
EDIT: Forgot Downie |

Remove Klink and most likely Arco... we wouldn't have picked at least 1 of them up with 1 less injury in Dupuis. |

5 of those came from Sutter who I think everyone is in agreement isn't anywhere near playing how he was playing last year in the playoffs. Now maybe he turns that around again, but I'm not holding my breath.
On paper the bottom 6 this year is better than last year, but really if you stop and think about it, not by a whole lot. Sutter is worse than he was last year, so that is a drop off and a pretty big one. Downie is definitely better than Glass so that is an increase to compensate for the drop off in Sutter. Adams = Adams, so no change there. Bennett = Bennett, so no change there. So really you are looking at Spaling and LaPierre versus Goc and Gibbons. LaPierre and Goc seem to be a wash to me, although LaPierre brings more physicality, but that really isn't going to translate into goals. Spaling is a better all around player than Gibbons, but Gibbons scored 2 of those 9 goals you mentioned. I don't really expect more than that from Spaling, if he had a goal a series, I would be pretty happy. |

Kids been a stud all year, team just can't buy a goal.
Just tossed mitchell out there since he's a useful bottom 6 LW/c and since you guys hate Sutter so much we could do a forward swap, saves you guys over 2m on cap and he has terms left on his current contract
To sweeten the deal we will give you talbot back haha |

I think I'm the only one here who wants O'Reilly. I wish sutter wasn't a turd sandwich this year and pens could make a nice offer involving sutter, bennett, Harrington for O'Reilly. |

Cheap to acquire but he's not worth what he'd have to give up to to fit his cap hit....not even close. - YouMeAndDupuis9

Sutter also wasn't playing as a 3C in the NYR series. He had Jokinen and Neal as wingers so he was the 2C- which I wouldn't term a depth forward. Sutter was AWFUL (2g and 2a) in the 2013 playoffs with quality wingers. He's a blackhole that sucks productivity out of anyone he plays with.
