I've got a cat. Shes friendly, hardly ever meows, and the poop box is on my balcony. I don't have to walk her, she cleans herself, and if I want to go away for a couple nights I can leave a big bowl of food and water and she won't tear the house to shreds.

Our cat eats until the food is gone, no matter how much food there is. We went away for a day and a half one time, and left a bag of bocce balls on top of the food container which was on top of the fridge, so he couldn't get in to it. When we got home the bocce balls had been knocked off, the food was tipped over and he was sleeping in what was left. He probably ate a month's worth of food. I hate that guy. |

I agree on some of your points but even with the challenges, to create a proper development system should not not impossible. It just seems so many pro organizations can't get it right. |

You guys got me thinking about Team Development Systems.
Can it really be that difficult to set up a development system that actually develops young players? With the amount of hockey knowledge out there you would think that putting a plan together wouldn't be very hard.
Let's see if we can come up with a plan ourselves (and we don't know poop).
1. Respected, experienced, and stable management team
2. Draft players that have the skill set that compliments team philosophy
3. Draft players that have opportunities to ‘climb the ladder’ (meaning don’t overdraft one particular position so positional log jams are created)
4. Pro club develops good relationships with junior clubs with open lines of communication
5. Pro club develops good relationship with national team organizers (lobby like hell to get your rookies invited to camps)
6. Pro club may try to position rookies on junior teams that have good reputations for teaching and development (and winning)
7. Own your own minor league team
8. Pro club ensures that coaching staff at minor league shares same development philosophy and playing style as big club
9. Constant communication between rookies and pro club (keep everyone on the radar)
10. Set up camps and instructional sessions for developing players in off season
11. Let players develop in junior and minor league as long as possible without damaging psyche
12. When called up, place them in positions to succeed and a long enough leash to allow them to lean at the pro level and not just worry about making mistakes
What else am I missing? - bloatedmosquito
Developing players is easy. You only need to do one thing:
COPY KEN HOLLAND!!!
Unfortunately most teams and fans don't have the patience. |

Would you guys trade Matthias for a 2nd if he's demanding something like 2.5M or 3M per over 3 years on his next deal? - Nucker101
I'd be ok with Matthias in the $2M - $2.5M range. Give him Higgins' money! At $3M I'd take the 2nd. |

I think the Canucks are on the right track now and instead of just saying we're following the Detroit model, I think we might actually be doing that. Consider that Detroit as a playing destination, probably isn't that attractive geographically or from a city perspective, but doesn't normally suffer from problems in attracting free agents, or others in trades (until just recently when they went through a 'bad' spell).
The Canucks and Vancouver are relatively desirable from a geographic viewpoint, endorsement potential, etc... and if mgm't lets a stable team do its job and brings the AHL team closer then i'm sure a lot of the points you made and i commented on can bear some fruit.
not sure if NHL clubs are allowed to own junior teams, but if i was the Canucks I'd get some legitimate scouts (not Ron Delorme) out to scout the local talent and keep in touch with guys who watch those teams regularly (radio broadcasters for the junior clubs) and who would know the character of the players as well. I know a broadcaster for one of the BC junior clubs and he has some solid insight into the team and players, so i don't think this is a difficult thing to do. |

I see several problems with this... see below...
1. the mgm't team depends on ownership not mucking about.
2. Team philosophy may be off, or changed without notice (aka MG after the defeat to the B's and then wanting to have the 'courage' to stay the course)
3. Overdrafting at one position might create logjams at that position so that it can be exploited to trade from a position of strength to bolster positions of weakness...
4. Pro club having good junior club relations can't hurt, no issues there.
5. Pro club develops good relationship with national team organizers (lobby like hell to get your rookies invited to camps) has problems since the national team organizers are usually a bunch of mooks from Ontario who don't give a shiite about the colonies such as BC... Pro club should tell the national team organizers to go frank themselves unless there is representation on the selection committee, $ spent in BC to develop talent, clear guidelines to dispute their selections or decisions about BC based players, and no pandering to any given region like southern ontario and quebec.
6. Pro club may try to position rookies on junior teams that have good reputations for teaching and development (and winning) - junior teams are a private enterprise - the Pro Club should just buy one and take care of its own assets.
7. Own your own minor league team - this is a given. no qualms here.
8. Pro club ensures that coaching staff at minor league shares same development philosophy and playing style as big club. see points 1 and 2 above.
9. Constant communication between rookies and pro club (keep everyone on the radar) - probably better to have proven veterans rooming with the rookies. though the new collective agreement screws up the program on this. probably a good idea to assign solid vets to mentor rookies in how to be a professional and conduct themselves during all team events, meetings, etc...
10. Set up camps and instructional sessions for developing players in off season - CBA won't allow this i believe. have to comply with the CBA. nothing stopping the veteran leadership from doing this on their own though. just give them the idea and any training materials or documentation to help them do this.
11. Let players develop in junior and minor league as long as possible without damaging psyche - this is part of points 1 and 2 above, and would form part of the team philosophy
12. When called up, place them in positions to succeed and a long enough leash to allow them to lean at the pro level and not just worry about making mistakes
- this has to do with the coach's decisions, can't micro-manage the coach or you won't get any good coaches joining the team..
great idea to start this conversation. thanks. - kaptaan
Pro teams have very little say in what happens with junior teams and their prospects. You own their rights... that's it. Until they go pro, you own their rights only.

I've learned not to argue with cat people. They are insecure and get depressed easily. I always see them at the grocery store covered in cat hair all grumpy and low hygiene. Their kids have black eyes and very itchy scalps.

Saw them live with Slayer. Crazy concert, insane fans, general admission on the floor, nowhere better to watch a concert than working your way up to the stage. - kaptaan
Agreed it can be intense down on the floor. I caught Maiden back in the day on the Powerslave tour and had worked my way up to 8th row center on the floor...one of the greatest spectacles I have ever seen after that I was hooked on Metal/Arena rock.
Saw Lamb Of God a few years back too and braved the pit...took a couple shots to the melon at first but I gave it back to be sure lol
Was a bloody good time though.
