From what I hear, Dupuis may never play again. I don't think Downie is back next year, at least without a 100% increase.
I'm not in favor of trading BB for scraps, but I do think that he could be a guy to tip the scales on a trade to upgrade a position in the present. If you have to give up the future of BB, but including him in a deal improves your chances of winning in the future, you have to be open to it.
Edit: As highly-touted as he is, can we please let Kasperi Kapanen play an NHL game before penciling him in as a top-6 player? - jmatchett383
True on Dupuis. Can't scratch him off the list without knowing for sure though.
Wouldn't count Downie out after the abysmal seasons he put together in Colorado and Philadelphia. Maybe he wants to stay in an environment that he knows is good for him. Plus he's slown down as Sutter got ice cold and our top 6 got healthy so I don't know how much of a raise he'd actually fetch on the open market. He's been nothing but good for this team. If the numbers work out, there's no reason for the Pens not to bring him back. Guy borderline deserves an A on his sweater.
Your point about Kap makes it all the dumber to trade away Beau. |

Then again, I could say "Giroux may never play again." It's not true, it's not untrue, it's in that legalistic ether.

No, I hate punks like Evander Kane that do poop like they do to get out of their situation. He brought alot of crap on himself. He is being paid alot of money to play hockey. He was too worried about trying to get out of Winnipeg; he forgot the most important thing. I hope kids like this fail in life to be honest. - Oneonta Penguin

What this season has made you believe that? Dumoulin sure. I think Harrington still needs sometime in WBS. Maybe if Dumo is with the big club all season next year Harrington can have his time to be the top dog defenseman down there like Despres and Dumoulin have been. Its been great for their development, no reason why it wouldn't be great for the development of a guy as promising as Harrington too. |

His pockets are already full, so he has achieved that. He won't live long enough to spend the money he already has. He's third behind 66 and 99 in money made. If I was 43 and it was my last year, I would go for a cheap million deal on the team he basically grew up on to win another cup. |

The excuses for Bennet on this board are as mind boggling as those who want to bring back Jagr. Stop the excuses of his injuries. He simply hasn't shown much of anything to say he is a long term solution to our problem. And I'm a Denver University homer too ... the place where he played some games, but spent alot in the press box due to what else ... injuries. - Oneonta Penguin
Is it fair to simply say he is currently not a "fit" into the identity this team is trying to build? There was a time and place Bennett did but with HCMJ wanting to build a bigger, grittier type team guys like Sutter, Bennett don't fit the mold.
I think the identity crisis has always been an issue. First, management (Bylsma)wanted a fast, skating team ala MTL now. Now, once pushed around by the BOS, PHI teams, the focus has changed.
The top 6 has identity.. elite centers with wings to retrieve pucks and crash the net.
I think the bottom 6 needs an identity.... Smaller speed skill guys (Bennett)? Bigger gritty guys (Downs, Lap)? Two way checking guys (Sutter)? A mix clearly isn't working. |

Because he handled some big bodies and was in position where you'd want him to be.
He is not ready this year, but when he screwed up, next shift he didn't make the same mistake, he's a quick learner.
He can skate and hits his first pass almost every time, I stand my the theory if you've got the puck they don't.
Camp next year they will want him up. We could be real young back there, and I'm ok with that. |

The Penguins have to walk a fine line with BB.
They are in "win now" mode, so they can't be worried about what the future holds, and have to be all in for this year. However, they can't be so short-sighted as to give up all of their quality young assets in case they don't win this year. So, do they basically try to sell as high as they can on Bennett's potential, or do they wait and hope that he can be a steady contributor while the window is still open? - jmatchett383
Sell Bennett. His role is questionable; he cannot be planned around. His ability to be in the line up is too mercurial to plan around, either. He's due for a new contract and essentially BB hasn't gotten past the point of exploring whether he has chemistry with anyone on the Penguins' roster. I don't think that warrants a bridge deal. BB is a guy who would be better served developing in the minors for a while. |

Maybe he still not 100% up to speed from the injury or maybe it's just a mental thing. ..it's either move him now and give him a fresh start or ride it out and hope it gets better but I'm not sure it will

I see no problem with a mixture and balance as long as we have players that are good at what they do. Our bottom 6 has two issues.
1) Our 4th line is full of scrub players that don't do poop. With a healthy lineup that's not as much the case anymore as Downie has now trickled down to the 4th. Adams-Lapierre-Downie isn't the worst, although I'm not the biggest Lapierre fan but he won't sink our ship. Adams is Adams. I'm over it. I'll move on.
2) All our 3rd line center can do is win face offs and execute on breakaways. He's not physically imposing ala Jordan Staal and doesn't use his body for anything and he's not a talented 5 on 5 scorer. The result is that the 3rd line loses the puck whenever Sutter has it on the boards. The third line will just not produce while he centers it. Remember that he couldn't produce with Hornqvist while Malkin was out. No excuse for that. A line of Kunitz-Sutter-Comeau would put up almost as bad of numbers as Spaling-Sutter-Bennett. The wingers aren't the problem. It's Sutter. He kills that line.
EDIT: I'm starting to realize that I'm encroaching on Bartley level hate for Sutter. I should really relax. He's quickly turning into my new Tyler Kennedy. |

http://www.theglobeandmai...l-dupuis/article21651124/
Doctors diagnosed the 35-year-old Dupuis with a blood clot in his lungs on Wednesday, likely ending his season and possibly putting his career in jeopardy.
“It’s not a great situation to be in but that’s the card that I’ve been dealt,” Dupuis said. “Hockey is definitely second on my mind right now.”
The married father of four will be on blood thinners for at least six months, meaning he won’t be cleared to return well into the postseason if at all. Dupuis had six goals and five assists while playing in each of Pittsburgh’s first 16 games but complained of pain in his chest on Monday and stayed behind for tests as the Penguins rolled to a 4-0 win in Montreal on Tuesday.
Surrounded by a handful of teammates, including captain Sidney Crosby and defenceman Kris Letang, the popular and ever optimistic Dupuis allowed he’s not sure if he’ll play again.
“It’s hard for me to answer that question right now, not all the results have come back,” Dupuis said. “But I’ll put the effort into it.” |

Game theory.
Oh, and the NHLPA. Don't think there won't be pressure. They'll want a template for a guy almost ten years past he 35+ contract clause in the CBA who can still produce first line numbers.

I agree with what your saying. I'm just saying I'd like the bottom 6 to be good at something! anything!
Sick of seeing Downie drive the net and take himself out of the play...meanwhile Bennett's out muscled for the puck and Sutter's already swung out of the zone to cover an opposing winger headed up ice.
