It's a bad deal when you acquire something that ISN'T or WASN'T a need. You had two very strong lines going with Crosby and Malkin, and the top power play in the league at the time, so the reason for this trade was what exactly? - Oneonta Penguin
He probably thought that adding Iginla would take a good thing and make it even better.
GMs should never be satisfied and always looking for ways to improve their teams. He felt that iginla would improve an already great offensive weapon without giving up roster assets. |

Sutter is not a quality 3C. He is not a high quality 4C. Name one thing he does worthy of his contract?
Also, capable 3Cs can be found in the FA market. Perreault, Grabovski, and Richards were all signed to reasonable contracts as UFAs and would all be superior options to Sutter. - jfkst1
Name a UFA center this summer who would sign for under 3.5 per and superiour to Sutter... Marcel Goc is not one. |

The dumbest thing I've ever heard was something thinking Jarome Iginla was truly a need at the trade deadline for Pittsburgh.
If there was a plan in place, wouldn't he have been used more properly? Fact is, there was no plan. Hence, what we got on the ice. Not rocket science here. Ignorant is not recognizing the facts. - Oneonta Penguin

I think replacing Sutter in FA is easier said than done. Quality 3rd line centers are going for 4.5-6 mill on long term deals. We dont have that wiggle room.
Although Sutter has been disappointing as of late, he is still a servicable 3rd line center.. i'd think they will hold onto Sutter going into next season, put Sunqvist as 4th line center if he can repeat last years camp... and come the deadline move Sutter for a rental or draft picks if it looks like Sunqvist is capable of bumping up to 3rd line duties.. if not you hold onto Sutter and decide weather you retain or move on that off season.. - Willaged
That's the thing... I don't think Sutter is anywhere close to "quality" for 3.3 mil. He'll be lucky to get 30pts this year. Not to mention those UGLY possession stats. He's replaceable and I'd gladly add another 1.5 mil for a much better player at that position. |

Adding Iggy was a counterproductive move. I said it at the time too. When you have the top two lines clicking very well; have the best power play in the league at the time, what was the point? James Neal was on his way to 40 goals while playing with Malkin on a certain side. So, its smart to ruin that? |

So by your reasoning, trading a 7th round pick for, say, Jakub Voracek, with Philly retaining 50% of his salary, is a horrible move because you already have 2 top-line wingers? I say, if you can make a good thing better, then do it. That's what he tried to do by adding Iginla. |

My opinion- no one on that list who respresents an upgrade to Sutter is signing for under 3.5
I'm not trying to defend Sutter here, I agree, he's been awful... but a cap world is tough...you are going to have weak spots on every team. |

GM's get paid to make plans.... there was a plan... it just didn't work out.. if they had won a cup with that team, this conversation would never be happening, but they didn't, so now your hindsight is saying there was no plan in place. Maybe you don't realize how difficult it is to actually win a Stanley Cup, but if a GM is not looking to improve his team, he is not doing his job. There is no way in hell that he acquired Iginla to "keep him away from Boston." When a GM is building a team, he is worrying about improving HIS team, he is not thinking about how to keep another team from improving. Sorry, but I couldn't disagree more with any of your logic on the Iginla topic. |

its about collecting the right players and getting the right coach. For many years Canada failed at getting the Gold medal, but yet, had the vast majority of the good players in the field. Why was that? - Oneonta Penguin
Coaching, that's why !!! Gretzky sitting on the bench for the shoot out ...and I wouldn't say canada didn't medal "for many years" they won 3 of 5 since NHL players have gone so I'm sorry but your point is invalid

I think that Peverley, Sobotka, Soderberg, and maybe Brunner could do as well. Maybe they could be had for cheaper. |

Iggy is a HOFer that should have played with Sid or Geno on HIS wing. Although 87s line was one of the best in hockey I would have moved one of them down for Iggy. We got a top 3 player for a first. I don't care what team you are, that is going to make your team better all throughout. Trickle down effect was not used by DB. There is no excuse why he couldn't have won the Cup that year. This is one of the reasons he is at home snapping into some slim jims. That team was STACKED |

Santorelli. It is believed that he asked for a 4 year 3mill AAV deal from Toronto, they said no and that is why he is on the trade block.
Late to the party, but is productive. |

The Pens will have some flexibility next year. They can and should pay a little more to upgrade that position. |

Sutter is a complete and utter drain at his salary and there is not a shred of evidence that suggests otherwise. Scuderi is grossly overpaid and is a better use of money than Sutter. Soderberg, Stoll, Richards, Richardson, Sheppard, Santorelli, and Winnik are all potential options that meet your criteria. |

No, Peverely hasn't returned. But if he's healthy, could be had one a cheap "prove it" deal.
Soderberg will get a raise, but not sure it will be a $2.5M raise. |

Right, and that goes on the coach... The GM acquires the tools for the coaches to use... the coach is the one who shuffles the lines, picks the lineup, and runs the practices... I feel like I remember a report over the summer that DB was extremely stubborn and didn't like to listen to upper management regarding personnel moves? I could be wrong though. |

Shepperd (-ard???) never really stood out to me. Seems like a better 4th line fit. |

How else can you explain playing Crosby, the best player in the game, on his off-side to accommodate James Neal on the PP? |
