The mood has changed on Sutter so quickly. In November most of you were naming your first born child after him. Ryan was cast off for saying Goc would fill in without missing anything. Now you all want to string him up? I think most of it stems from insecurities for all of you. You saw his junk in that interview and made you feel less of a man? I'd probably hang on to him at this point so he can increase his value a bit. Never sell low unless it's Enron
- dbell646

I was never in love with Sutter. I just thought that we didn't have a better option at 3C, and then he played way above his actual value for the beginning of the season. My hope was that he would keep it up and we could trade him in the offseason and give Sundqvist the 3C as his to lose.

But now, he's playing bellow his value (which isn't high to begin with) and a guy like Goc, who I didn't see as a potential substitute at the beginning, would probably be a better option at this point. So we let Goc waste away with Adams and Sill while Sutter was producing, and now when Sutter has not only come back down to earth but also sunk down to hell, we trade away a 3/4C tweener for a definite 4th line grit player? Congrats Old Man Ruth. Now we're stuck with Sutter with no option to replace him.

I know and I hate myself for that, but his play at that time deserved to be acknowledged.

I thought of that. I have something similar in mind. I consider it a project that I'll work on as time allows. Thank you for your consideration.

Beau as trade bait? For who? *Edit* Dont care. To trade away a young talent like that with an easily controlled contract and cap hit is poor management. Stupid move. Unless you literally are walking away with a steal and that won't happen.

Dude, you have a point. Well said.

I was never a fan but admit, I was warming to him early this season. After his playoff performance, I thought he may have turned a corner.

But, alas, I've officially given up on him. Just cant watch him lifelessly get bumped off the puck again. IMO he is the symbol of the general p*ssyness of this team. He symbolizes all that is soft, mentally weak, and gritless.

Truly, at this point, I just want his cap space. I'd ride him out this season and use him to recoup some of our draft picks via an off-season trade. I could certainly see the Pens getting a 2nd and 3rd round pick for him in the off season.

It would be amazingly stupid and short sighted. This team needs more skilled wings on ELC or RFA deals; not to be unloading one of the few that they do have. He may be struggling now, but shipping him out of town for a ~30gm, 3rd-line rental player would be pretty stupid.

How many times did people want to trade Despres? Now we have a Top-Dman with a $900K Cap Hit this year & next w/ two RFA years remaining after that.

Question for everyone:

I no longer have Center Ice. Are Penguins radio broadcasts streamed online?

I used to listen to games while I did some commercial fly tying. No longer a commercial tier but I would certainly like to listen to the games while tying for myself.

No idea about online, but they are streamed through their offical phone app. I use it all the time when I am in the car via bluetooth.

if not, try Tune In Radio. You should be able to get the local radio broadcasts, including whatever station is playing the game.

You can listen live to the radio station they are on at www.1059thex.com so I am assuming that when a game is on that is what you would be listening to if you went to the stations website. Not 100% but I would be surprised if it didn't.

assuming crosby, malkin, letang, and fleury are not moved (due to the fact that i just dont see the organization doing it), who do you ship out?

and what does your rebuilding plan/length/term/objectives look like?

- stayinthefnnet

Assuming the Pens have Crosby, Malkin, Fleury, Letang -
1) It’s now Jacques Martin’s team. Install a ruthless trapping/counterattacking system. ‘High Tempo’ or ‘possession’ as a system is to say ‘run and gun’, much the same way as ‘energy line’ is a euphemism for guys running around looking for anyone to hit. Trap, counter. Screen, pound the puck on net, rebound. Set the trap back up. Stop being ‘fun’ to play against. Stop pretending that having a bunch of rats in the bottom six makes the team tougher to play against. Play Devils hockey: poised, high percentage, low risk.
2) It will take some time for the contracts of Dupuis and Kuntz to expire; Perron, Sutter, Spaling back next season. Hornqvist is a great player for just this kind of strategy. Use the time to develop Kapanen and Keunhackl into serviceable players. Draft and develop many defensive forwards in the AHL, along the lines of John Madden or Jere Lehtinen. They should be able to step into the NHL line up and trap it up by their third year pro. Concerned about bottom six scoring? Trap, counter. Screen, pound the puck on net, rebound. Set the trap back up.
3) Play the young D. Play them a lot, and play them against quality competition. Allow them to fail. Allow them to develop together and hold each other accountable. Allow leadership to emerge. Allow them to learn how to win together. The young D has the potential to be a really dynamic unit with very few points of liability.
4) Develop 87 and 71 into more complete players, especially 71. 71 has all the makings of a monster 2-way player. Kill penalties, match up against other centers, and lead by way of making excellent decisions with the puck and especially away from the puck. I would rather Malkin be a RW than a C.
5) Play Crosby and Malkin together more, or trade one of them. Ten years into their careers and they haven’t figured out how to use each other to win games. The power play is the best example of being terribly predictable and ineffective. We all cringe when it is suggested that they play together at even strength, and that’s worrying.
6) If the likes of Kunitz, Scuderi, Sutter, Martin, &c. can be converted into futures, do it. The Penguins are going to need a lot of room for error while developing a new forward core. Some players who do well in Juniors don’t make good pros, &c.
7) The Penguins can be a team that is extremely difficult to score against and is built to handle multiple styles effectively by 2017. That is when I imagine the new defensive core has some playoff experience and is ready to run the table. The cap may have increased a bit by then, but the Pens will have plenty of ELC balance under this strategy in case they need to add a piece here or there. But the whole season shouldn’t hinge on adding a piece, like, say, a third line rw.
If that seems like too long, remember that this is what has been necessary since 2013, when I started racking up the crossed looks and the calumny from my fellow readers for making such crazy suggestions. It’s either this or watch Sutter pretend he’s Mike Modano all the way until the second round of the playoffs.

Goc was never a realistic option to replace Sutter for anything but the short term.

It's the same old story, a 3rd line center moves up to the 2nd line and is expected to produce, then doesn't, then he sucks all of the sudden.

It's Staalsy Pt. II. Same situation, same complaints, same venom.

Whatever. It's February. Until this team gets a chance to gel without a constant shuffling, it's honestly not worth worrying about.

Just read the story.

The number of times I had to re-read a line & said to myself "Is this really want the NHL wants hockey to be?" was about 4 times.

If they took his cap space and improved this team I'm with you.
