I agree it was unique and I credit Larry David for that... along with the great cast and Jerry... That said, I have no idea what you mean by the bolded part.

I disagree on that... But the Final Episode could certainly have been better.

... Maybe they were cursed by God for killing off Susan... who was arguably the sanest 'Regular' ever on the show... if not the ONLY sane one.

The story I got... and remember... was that Whelehans used to have a Liquor/Beer/Wine Store on Haddon Ave just outside of Haddonfield and they opened up a little bar on one half that become so popular that they eventually decided to close down the store and expand the bar... then they opened up another and then another etc. and then the Pour House, Chop House, Trendo, etal.

Now Canals on the other hand was almost the exact opposite... Had a longstanding local bar down the road from my buddy in Pennsauken that had a little liquor store in it... They sold their products at a very reasonable price... they decided to expand the shop and then just closed down the bar to make way for it... Then they expanded to other locations and just sold the booze.

Both became giants and are all over the place... My guess in the PA bar may have been a partner with the Haddonfield Road one or something. I used to buy at the liquor store and was there when they opened the bar and expanded it. The Pour House has the best Burgers I've ever eaten and a tremendous draft beef selection.

PJ Whelihans was started just north of Allentown in Lehighton PA and became so successful that it morphed into a restaurant group that bought various under performing restaurants/bars in PA and NJ but it 95% owned by Robert Platzer with 5% his family "trust". One bar/restaurant they bought near haddonfield already owned an office and it was easier to run operations there so that became the corporate headquarters as it was centralized as well as deal with NJ v PA liquor licensing issues and transfers of ownership with being closer to the Platzer family homestead

Robert Platzer owns the entire group majority, no real partners except family, some bought out restaurant owners were retained as managers or consultants.

TY

Seems that some of the (Sub)Urban Legend was somewhat distorted... Whelihans, as I stated was definitely a Liquor Store and there was a small bar attached... but I suppose that could have been there rather than added as I remember... which makes sense like the Canals Bar/Liquor Store reverse process I mentioned... While I had thought that the operation was local, I certainly could understand that in fact it was a part of the PA operation... My story was basically true with only the Owner's origin misplaced.

I see what you were talking about and how I had a half-story and had some false facts from local (sub)Urban Legend... and how it all now falls into place.

I still find it interesting though how two Bar/Liquor Store small situations (Whelihans/Canala) can independently make decisions to split their operations and go whole hog in separate operations and both become major Area behemoths that did not compete against each other on their fast and great rise... The PA part does surprise me though as PJ's is still mainly made up of NJ establishments with som PA ones in the mix... Whatever, that dude who spearheaded it made some fantastic decisions and his various chains are very nice and reasonable operations with decent quality goods.

I stand corrected and will adjust my story going forward.

if anyone has anything on why there is a "canal's" and a "joe canal's", both with the same color scheme and logo font but apparently different places, i'd love to hear it.

Seriously though, I believe it is an off-shoot faction of the Corp... A friendly split?... but I have no details.

i have one of each less than 3 miles apart basically right outside my door.

it's brutal on my liver but it's good to have them both there because one has a very large beer selection with an entire aisle of mix-and-match single bottles you can choose from and when i'm going for whiskey i can always check to see who has a bottle i'm looking for if the other doesn't carry it. also i can comparison shop and get the better price when they both carry the same bottle.

what a time to be alive.
