Interesting. I wonder why Leier didn't get the call-up.
- jmatchett383

They might just want to find out what they really have (if anything) in Straka in an NHL game. I hope they give him more than just a game. They can be patient with Leier. Just my take.

AHL is on all star break. Many of the guys have traveled home or on vacation. They were probably limited by who was actually in the area.
- PhillySportsGuy

Not to mention with all the weather issues, even guys somewhat close in proximity may have trouble making it in time.

Yeah, that's kind of what I'm thinking. Straka may be more of a finished product with a small chance to prove himself, while Leier is more of a call him up for good when he's ready type.

I read that their break means they aren't allowed to even practice until Thursday morning, so I'm sure a bunch of guys went south.

Interesting excerpt from 30 Thoughts:

23. So what does all of this new data mean?

NHL COO John Collins said last weekend we will see an overhaul of NHL.com beginning next month. It is the first of several phases intended to make the website a much more comprehensive place.

The plans are ambitious, from enhanced stats (Corsi, Fenwick, PDO) to a cleaner look to greater interactivity. The intention is also to make it easier to compare players, not only today, but era to era.

I'm aware of the situation the Flyers are in the standings.
- MJL

But yet you think there is no reason the Flyers should try to still make the playoffs. Because trying to still win this year will hurt them next year not to mention farther down the road. The Flyers biggest problem is they keeping trying to win now. To me this season is over and yes I still want them to compete everynight and try to win. But to hold on to aging players that you can a good return for is not a good idea.

If all were available, I'd say Akeson, Blair Jones, Andrew Gordon, Cousins, Leier and Rosehill would all be ahead of Straka for a call up.

Yeah. They don't play until Thursday, so I assumed most would still be out of town.

Well, Straka is an offensive player. So if your going to replace a guy like Raffl who plays in the top 9, I'm glad they picked a guy like Straka. Akeson would have been the obvious choice, but he's likely unavailable (AHL All Star, if I'm not mistaken?)

Petr Straka
GP G A P PIM +/-
2013-14 60 9 18 27 22 -4
2014-15 39 11 6 17 18 -3

Nothing all that daunting, but the kid doesn't even turn 23 until the off-season. Still intrigued by this one.

If you read the post I replied to, it talked about trading players such as Striet because the Flyers won't be ready to contend for a couple of years. My reply stated that the Flyers shouldn't just throw any seasons away, which is in reference to the next couple of seasons. I think it is a mistake to have a firesale of players just to get as many assets as possible. Still need to field a team next year and beyond, and need to have the proper envionment for any young players added to the team, namely any of the young defenseman. You'll also notice that I stated that there should be a middle ground, and that they shouldn't sacrifice the future for now, as they've done in the past.

Same here, because the sites that are available now suck.

Akeson and Jones, yes. Andrew Gordon is an AHL journeymen who has far to much responsibility on the Phantoms. I've never considered him for a call-up. Blair Jones is the better AHL/NHL tweener.

Cousins I could see getting called up if we had an opening at center in the top9, which is damn near impossible with all of the versatility we have of guys that can play multiple forward positions. Leier, IMO, is probably last on this pecking order. Hes still developing his game as a pro, definitely behind guys like Cousins and Straka.

While Straka may have been one of a few who were available on short notice, I also think the Flyers see an opportunity to start assessing the farm. Wouldnt be surprised if guys like Cousins or Leier also get cups of coffee as the season closes out, especially if we continue to lose.

As long as we have NHL.com's killer stat breakdowns, such as scoring numbers by day of week, we're golden.

Streit is not going to be part of the future. He is a now player and this team has no chance now. I also didn't say a firesale is in order. To trade an aging d-man that is playing well for a decent return should seriously be considered.

They need to make the site more usable on mobile, tho... that tiny nav bar w/ the tiny links in those stupid flyouts... so freaking hard to click and I don't even have fat fingers.

I really have no hopes of most websites working well on mobile. Especially mobile formatted sites, they seem to work the worst on phones/tablets in my experience.

I'd say I'm hoping for a decent mobile app equivalent, but official apps of sports leagues also tend to be no beuno.

I agree. I love Streit and always have even before we acquired him, but he is having a great season and this may be the one time his value is this high. Hell he could get injured next season and not go back to same form, thats a risk of holding onto him. He's primarily been healthy guy his career, but you never know in this league. However, i only would move him if the deal is right for us. Not just for the heck of it to move him because he isn't part of the future. Having said all of this, this trade scenario would be much easier and clearer if Kimmo was actually playing or if his future had better idea if he is playing again or not. Aside from Streit tho, i think we should try to move Del Zotto, Schultz, Coburn, Grossman. I'd add Amac but that just seems unrealistic to actually trade him with that contract. And if we don't trade Del Zotto or Schultz, extend them for short term. Del Zotto has stated he wants to come back and Schultz has been consistent for us and was a nice signing by Hexy. Plus he would be good vet for our young guys.

It should, depending on what you think a decent return is.

His point was that you need to field an actual NHL defense next year. You can't just do a defense of Ghost-Morin, Hagg-Alt, Petterson-Manning next year because you want to have an environment to work them into the league not throw them to the wolves with no veterans.

Now, which of those veterans are kept is up for debate. But he wasn't saying keep Streit 100% no matter what. He simply said that he has value as a veteran on the team to hopefully help them improve. Right now, I'd love to have him around to help transition Ghost as first unit PP QB for the next 2 years.

because our coach doesn't understand how to use him. And has put him the doghouse this season, mainly because of his own stupid misuse of him. Guy is tiny and is expected to be in a checking role? Pure non sense
