Did they ever discuss an extension prior to him reaching free agency? I get that what Suter said in many ways mirrors what Stammer is saying but Stammer's UFA clock is still a full year away. This is him saying he envision signing an extension a year before he hits FA

Suter said he wanted to sign an extension, but he didn't want to do it during the season because he "just wanted to focus on playing hockey". I'm not saying Stamkos has the intention to do the same...just know that players aren't always honest when making statements like this.

Leverage in negotiations? I'm guessing he wants the max or really close to it and TB probably wants to bring it down to a lower level so that they can build a winner long-term.

Ultimately TB will have to cave in, but I'm sure his agent constantly reminds him to say certain phrases and words.

That's the difference. Stamkos isn't a UFA this summer and is saying this a full year ahead of that time. I see the similarities in what they said it is the context and timing that are different

That's cool, I can respect that. Had he been upfront about that & not lied to David Poile until the minute he signed with Minnesota, he wouldn't be an asshat.

But he didn't. So he's an asshat.

I would be incredibly surprised if Stamkos were to test out free agency... he's the leader of a team that has all the makings of a perennial Cup contender for the next decade, as the club is stacked with arguably the best roster of young talent in the league.

Also you have to wonder if spending the All-Star weekend in Columbus in January made him realize that Tampa Bay weather has a lot going for it

I'm interested in what tavares asks for on the next deal. Because his current contract is the one of the best values in the league. I like to think he'd be the type of guy to take a Crosby like contract around 8-9 allowing there to be room for a better cast around him. But he easily deserves a max contract like toews or kane.
