The loser point and shootout are far from ideal, but it's better than ties.
- _nay_

At least the Ties make sense.

The whole some games are worth 3 points and other 2 is complete nonsense.

But I agree that, as a fan, it's much more fun to watch a shootout.

I don't get the issue here...

You play to a tie, and both teams get a point, and then you play for the extra point.

I don't see why that is a problem.

If you prefer to just have games end in a tie, then fine, but then don't have overtime at all.

i think the problem people have is with some games being worth 3 points and some worth 2. and it really takes a bit of steam out of playoff and division races when every second game in March and April goes to OT because everyone is petrified of walking away emptyhanded.

i'm just not a fan. i'll watch a shootout and think to myself "this is deciding the outcome of a professional hockey game?"

Meh, Soccer also ends that way in big tournaments, Football as another very idiotic way to decide an outcome, even in their playoffs..... I don't think there's a perfect choice. I'm fine with the shootout if they change the points system, if not, go back to the tie.

Can't wait for the slam dunk contest and throw a football through a tire contest to decide games in the NBA and NFL.

Oh come on. Ties are (frank)ing boring, except for bitter, conservative old men who are allergic to change.

Oh wait...

Sure, but you'd get that problem in those games anyway if they ended in ties. Unless one team desperately needs that extra point, they're just going to plod along to a 1-1 finish.

I think they should keep the shootout, but have a 10-minute OT

but they play a 30 minute OT first with no extra subs allowed. so you get three subs for a whole game that goes on for another 30 minutes. guys would be collapsing on the field if the did not have spot kicks.

soccer they could go for days, they do it more out of necessity than out of choice and yes football is stupid, each team should at least get one possession.

there used to be a measure of satisfaction some time ago to see your team manage a hard fought tie in a tough road game. now they do and then pfffffft..... shootout

soccer makes sense because it could take those guys 3 hours to produce a goal sometimes and you'd just start having guys collapse from dehydration without a SO. but soccer has a really fair system. it really encourages teams to play for the win and punishes a tie.

then you should be entertained by the game itself not just the end result.

I don't care about the shootout or OT or ties.

I just want the games to have equal value.

3 pts for a win, 0 for a loss
2 for an OT/SO win, 1 for an OT/SO loss

football isn't sudden death anymore unless you give up a touchdown right away. and if you give up a touchdown right away you have no right to complain because you clearly sucked on that drive.

Sure, but if the end result is a tie, it tends to not feel like anything was accomplished at all.
