I go back and forth... I think that top 9 in some form or fashion is good enough to win, and having PMart just solidifies the defense that much more.
But...
Adding Justin Williams to the mix and putting Downie on the 4th line would make that forward group even better, and if Maatta is deemed healthy, it might be worth the risk. - rival22
Its a matter of opinion. I would rather keep Martin than trade for Williams, as I tend to value a deep D group over a deep F group. I see the merits on both sides, but with Crosby, Malkin, Honrquvist, Perron, Bennett, Comeau, Sutter & Downie, I'm less concerned about the F group than in years past. |

Truthfully, I wouldn't do it.
I am open to trading Martin, but it would have to be for a non-rental player (ie, Martin for a solid 3rd liner w/ a little term or RFA from Anaheim, Dallas, or LA). If it just a rental-for-rental swap, I think keeping Martin gives the Penguins the best chance to win the Cup this season.
With Perron and a little health, the F group looks solid to me w/ the exception of parts of the 4th line. And 4th line help doesn't require Paul Martin going the other way:
Perron-Crosby-Hornquvist
Comeau-Malkin-Bennett
Kunitz-Sutter-Downie
Spaling-Goc-Adams
Rust
The D may not miss Martin as it would have it past years, but I still like having an extra deep D over an extra deep F group. - s0rcerer1984
Good points. I cant really argue against your stance. Hell, it was my stance up to a few days ago (i.e. keeping Martin for a Cup run).
My thought on acquiring a non-rental player for Martin is that may present cap issues for next season. Havent worked out the #'s yet but something like that may put them over the cap. |

Next thing you know Adams is going to look at Bennett funny and break his wrist. Then I will demand his head on a spike.

I think to complete the forward group would be someone similar McGinn or Cogliano...just not sure who yet. Oh, and they must be left handed. |

COGS!!! If we could find a way to nab Cogs and make the cap numbers work without sending over Pauly Walnuts, our team would be officially complete. Exact type of player we need on the third with Flats and Steve that would allow The Kun and Sweet Bea to join forces with Malkin. No way Anahiem trades him though...

On the subject of P Martin Exactly how many cups have the Penguins won with P Martin in the lineup. Everyone with the attitude the sky is falling if he is gone are delusional. If he is in the press box eating nachos he is also useless. Trade him for at least a bag of pucks is better than letting him walk for nothing. As in business...He can be replaced |

It would have to be the right kind of player & at the right salary. I'm not talking about a $3.5M/yr guy or something; more like a solid 3rd liner signed at $1.5-$2M/yr. More or less, a guy who would replace someone like Goc, Downie, or Comeau.
Not sure if that is even possible, but that is what it would take for me to move Martin.

True, I mean we had Adams and Scuds when we won the cup and we have them now so we must be destined to win.... especially without Martin.
Martin is good for us and will definitely leave a hole in the lineup. I'm not saying that someone won't be able to step up and fill it but he will definitely be missed. |

I think it's funny sometimes when people call a guy making $700K in the NHL a waste of a sweater.
Adams job...for most of his career (especially in Pittsburgh) is to do the things that guys who make more money don't want to do or aren't supposed to do because it will take away from being able to do the highly skilled things when needed.
Adams has done the job asked of him countless times.
Is he a good possession player - off course not! On what planet would any coach ever expect Adams to be a good possession player?
Is he a scorer? Of course not...ditto my comments from above.
I understand the argument that he is very replaceable and it almost always centers around someone who has better possession and scoring numbers. It's tough to argue against that really.
For whatever reason...Adams has remained. It's probably simply because he works hard to stay a 4th liner and coaches know that has a good influence on other 3rd and 4th line players. In any case...it's probably his last go around here.
I have no problem with him getting into the face of Malkin. Geno needs it sometimes.
Obviously...if he takes runs at guys at practice...that's not good...but from what I have read...nothing so terrible happened in either incident...so i say it's very likely a non issue within the team. |

Adams better watch it. Malkin has a pretty hard shot, is pretty accurate, and is the best on the team at one-timers (he needs to do this more, by the way). He also has a bad temper. I don't think he is the type of player who would deliberately shoot at another guy's (and teammate's) head in practice but if Adams keeps provoking him needlessly there is no telling what he might do. I have a feeling that he doesn't want to start his retirement with a reconstructed jaw and teeth implants. |

So you try to defend Adams by listing all the ways he is a replaceable plug. Then you back it up with personal opinion and conjecture as to why he's still played that couldn't be verified unless you were a part of that locker room. Combine that with numerous reports from people who constantly cover the team for a living (not that their perfect or infallible) and I have to wonder how the (frank) you think that'd be a good defense of Adams.

I'm no fan of Adams play, but there really isn't much to be done about him. His contract ends at the end of the season & its only for $700K. Don't love it, but at least its a small dollar, short term pain. Its the only saving grace of it all. |

Probably just a coincidence, but Geno was held pointless the 3 games before the first altercation between him and Adams. Since then, he has 4 points in 3 games. |

Agreed with this. Although I would rather have him scratched. We wouldn't have saved any real money trading or buying him out (if those were possible). I know damn well we won't resign him this off season. |

If he continues to have a rift with the team MVP, he's got to go. The PK didn't suffer one bit when he was out. I agree the dollar amount is peanuts, but attempting to hurt valuable players is ridiculous on every level. According to DK.... If the team waives him there's likely to be a party in the locker room. That's all I need to know. |
