One thing I've always wondered and haven't gotten a reasonable explanation is for team possession stats, why is the ratio of shot attempts a better proxy for possession than the ratio of time the puck is in each team's offensive zone?

MacArthur "drove possession" ( ) better than Crosby, and a bunch of other guys whose jocks he was not fit to carry.
