It was in reply to a guy who said that analytics are garbage because "everybody has the same opinion".

In my line of work, that's called consensus. That's when you know that you're onto something, and when you can start to publish results and get money

Ohh....no no no no no...

Consensus science is not science. Consensus is only used when facts can't prove something. Consensus science has lead to some of the biggest lies around.

That is complete, oxymoronic bullpoop. Science is, by definition "knowledge about or study of the natural world based on facts learned through experiments and observation"

Consensus science is good science. Lies are based on, or motivated by, a variety of other factors, not by science which is absolute and impartial (though may be misrepresented for reasons mentioned).

such as the "Pittsburgh model" of the rebuild.

you know... finish badly, finish badly again get more high picks - then be given the first generational player to come along in what 10-15 years.

you guys in Edmonton shouldn't feel to bad... unfortunately you sucked during the wrong years.

ahhhh...

so we trade 2 1sts and a 2nd for him... and then immediately offer him 10years at league max?

- BorjeFan4Ever

Eric Staal, Jordan Staal, O'Rielly, Ladd, Kane, Little, Bogosian, Mike Richards, Dubinsky, Myers, Coburn, Hall .. would be interesting players to look into for or rumours of them

its akin to the Detroit model....

which is get incredibly lucky in the 5, 6 and 7th rounds of the draft - each team does it occasionally... and then have an owner and management team who bought every hall of famer prior to the introduction of the CAP.

the smartest thing that Detroit has done historically is increase their draft chances by dumping middling vets at the deadline, or players that were duplicates of guys they already had... getting more picks.

Wrong. If there is evidence it's science. When it's not its consensus.

Go read dr. Michael chrichtons papers. He hated consensus science because it is lazy poop. Unproven by facts. Consensus science is pure poop. If it's science it is governed by physical laws and is able to be definitively proven. No need for consensus.

One of my favourite things on this site is when Penssuperfan2005 and DieHardPens2005 pipes up about how to draft.

Meh.

I know he's a smart cookie but consensus science is pure poop. It's what happens when there is lack of evidence to support something.

And no truer words have been spoken about that team. Then again, when 87Crosby05 posts he says how it's nothing more than jealousy.

agreed. but "Leaf nation" needs to think a bit.

if the Leafs finish say bottom five (which is quite likely) they'll get a decent player - but they aren't getting McDavid or Eichel.

they only reason a guy RNH might be available is either Oilers believe that they can replace him with something better/cheaper OR they've realized that he simply isn't robust enough to be a #1 C. do you want to spend to acquire a guy who arguably won't be any more impactful than Kadri?

I personally wouldn't touch either Staal - too much mileage.

Mike Richards is a salary dump from LAs perspective - nothing more - so giving anything significant up for him would be dumb - he's not going to turn the team into a contender overnight on his own.

Why would a team like Philly want to get rid of Coburn? - when they are loaded with older smaller guys on the back-end... again its a salary dump nothing more. Now if they wanted Gardiner in return (balanced out with picks then maybe)

ROR, Ladd, Bogosian - yes interesting.

Myers, Dubinsky no thanks.

get ready for it again... 'cause this year McDavid / Eichel are going to the new owner of the Franchise that GaryB needs to save (for some reason which none of us are smart enough to understand)... the Phoenix/Arizona (soon to be Las Vegas) Coyote-Gamblers.

I'm using the words consensus and science in their literal meanings, not as a buzzword combination. In this case, consensus being that of multiple experts based on expertise (not opinion) and solid analysis of data. Scientific consensus is not poop, it is necessary. The key is to amass enough proof to back up one's findings. Naturally, reproducibility is key here, but the onus has to be on the investigator in question to be impartial. It is when people are driven by what they want to find, not what they observe, that people reach what Dr. Chrichton has dubbed "consensus science".
