You know how I know that science is garbage? Because every single idiot who is obssessed with science has the exact same opinion on the Earth revolving around the Sun.

If there's one thing that tells me something is right, it's when everybody is completely inconsistent about the facts. That's the true test of knowledge.

- JohnFergusonJr

Scouting talent is what differentiates good teams from bad teams. A scientific fact is different than figuring out who is better defensively, Kadri or Bozak.

You trade Phaneuf. Send a message.
- Santo_44

I dont think a message is needed really, it is more so that we have too many offensive guys, that change is needed within the team's core. Phaneuf has been trailing off but he is that guy to log a ton of minutes and shut down the star players. If we trade phaneuf, who can we obtain to fill in his shoes that is a more defensive two way player like himself? I think they should limit their defensive woes by trading gardiner and getting kessel a more defensive center and trade bozak

Two things are silly when it comes to possession proxy stats:

1. Thinking they are the be all end all and explain everything about the game
2. Completely discrediting them

I'm still waiting for Edmonton to start winning like the analytics guys told us they would start doing. Was just an "unlucky start".

they are very unlucky... to have Craig MacTavish and Kevin Lowe running the team

I doubt he goes anywhere unless they really poop the bed in OKC. He comes across as a loyal kid who wants to win where he is at.

I agree. I understand that they should not be discredited. But many people honestly treat them like they are the be all and end all of the game, even if they insist that they dont. (See Mirtle, James).

Thought making your burger at 8am meant you might be crashing now.

My brother in law is staying with us for a while. He often walks in the door after work at 7pm and right into bed without eating and back up at 4am.

He wanted more then that. He knew going into this season he could get 5+ in free agency. He still can't play defense and will he get 50 points next year? Unlikely.
- Santo_44

It was well known in th emedia he was seeking 4x4 after the boston series and they squeezed him, then he wanted 4x5 this summer and they squeezed him and gave the money to a young horrible defender... Franson is actually not bad in his own end, not great but not bad, mostly because he gets the puck out when he gets it, which is why hew and Dion aren't spending as much time in their end and have okay plus minus nums... People need to remember he has been on a steady upward trend his whole career, with the exemption of last year playing with jake, who as we speak is ruining Polaks numbers this year as well...

Analytics look at what has already happened. They are irrefutable facts. If you look at things from that singular perspective then the people looking at them should come to the same logical conclusions.

When people look at things from multiple angles, then you get a clearer picture, but that doesn't reduce the value of any of it.

If everyone who looks at the numbers comes to the same conclusion, that tells you something. If you just dismiss it because nobody is dissenting, that's ridiculous.

One thing I've always wondered and haven't gotten a reasonable explanation is for team possession stats, why is the ratio of shot attempts a better proxy for possession than the ratio of time the puck is in each team's offensive zone?

Phaneuf doesn't really play a shutdown game though. When Phaneuf is playing well the team isn't in the defensive zone. He'll get the puck and take it out with the Forwards. It's why I want to see Polak with Phaneuf with even O/D Zone starts.

BUT if you can use science to figure it out, it's a lot better of a bet than trying to rely on your own judgment, which will be inevitably biased one way or another whether you realize it or not.

In most cases it's negligible. In Toronto's case it's fascinating. Toronto starts about 60% of the time in the D Zone and turn the puck over before any sustained possession, leading to more shots.

At the 4x4 he wanted last summer? Would have been a great deal... Same one he wanted the year before when he was the best d man down the stretch and in the playoffs playing with Gardner and Fraser, but alas...
- aminnes

Who wanted him for that? He was horrific last season.
