i have to disagree with you here. you may be right in that Seguin is just as crap defensively as Kessel. but the big difference is that Segiun is much better driver of possession and so he doesn't spend as much time defending as Kessel. and that's part of what makes possession guys so valuable: their best defence is how little defence they have to play. the fact that Seguin is a centre who can drive possession (and it's not just Benn... he did it in Boston too) is a huge, huge advantage. it's why teams build around centers and not wingers. - DoubleDown
This alone would be why i would take seguin. But i'm not sure seguin isn't better as a winger. But straight up, ya i'd take seguin but not by much.
Again, it's Dougie that's the real loss |

the problem is, he's taken the stupidest kind of risk: high risk, low reward. what were Bolland and Clarkson ever going to bring to the Leafs? quality third line minutes and some leadership? that's not the kind of risk a GM takes. the biggest issue with Nonis is that there's no rhyme or reason to anything he does. he just seems to react to things. his moves in 2013 were a direct reaction to the game 7 meltdown. his moves in 2014 were a direct reaction to the last 15 games of 2014. he doesn't seem like he has the ability, as a manager, to take a step back and see the big picture. he's all about plugging leaks. - DoubleDown
The Bolland trade was much more of a mistake overall than most will admit.
At the time I was good with it, I somewhat still bought into the leadership stuff.. thought (read hoped) it was actually a thing and would work out.
He came to the leafs with a 3.2 cap hit... that was actually about what he was worth..as we can see..and a good indication of why Chicago was able to let him go, despite scoring a cup winning goal. Bolland has lived off that goal and gotten a reputation as a clutch player with loads of intangibles and leadership. Even though we can see now he is just an average player with no super human leadership clutchiness qualities...he tends to get injured often..which further deflates his value imo. like lupul you are paying 5.5mil for 60 games..
ad to that the fact the leafs bought out Grabo and used up a valuable compliance buyout.. only to have to move 3 draft picks to replace him.
its these compounding errors that make Nonis a terrible GM like you state.. no foresight.. no patience like he preaches he has.. just bad at his job |

Can we get Jagr for cheap? It'd be fun to see Kessel-Kadri-Jagr on the top line for the rest of the season. He's been around too and could probably teach a thing or two. - TheMussel
No cap, same reason they couldn't make any moves last year, all the teams around them will add to make th playoffs, the Leafs won't, and then No bards will come out and say there weren't any good moves out there even though other teams made them... |

Absolutely. He has no planning. Has no game plan for the team or a system in place. He just goes for what he sees is "needed".
Also tells me he believes in the core and that it only needs a few tweaks to contend. |

i dont understand why a team has to be contending for a guy to be considered a #1. was Shea Weber not a #1 last year? when Calgary eventually drops out of contention, will Giordano not be a #1? Karlsson?
one guy who people don't talk about enough though is John Carlson in Washington. - DoubleDown
I don't understand why you think a team has to be contending for a guy to be considered a #1. Nobody claimed this. I used the criteria to quickly and easily identify some #1s, and then listed a bunch of others with this criteria: they are awesome. |

Nothing? - Canada Cup
When Kessel's not putting up points... he's a net loss (no pun intended). Hell, his line is usually outscored and outchanced every year, so maybe he's a net loss all the time.
This is in context to his quote here:
Jonas Siegel @jonasTSN1050 3h3 hours ago
Kessel's reaction to Ron Wilson comments regarding inconsistency: "Sometimes I go cold out there... What do you expect me to do out there?"
Which my response was, "do 2 out of 7 and I'll give you a passing grade, Kessel: Back check, Be a leader, Block a shot, Provide an outlet for the D, Hit someone, Take a hit, Drive the net" |

this is all well and good, except for he fact that before the skate cut injury, Bolland was on his way to being lobbied to replace Dion as Captain and it was looking like an excellent trade.
15 games... I know... but still, before he was hurt, Bolland was even better than advertised, as was his effect on the team |
