go ask the chicago fans if its keith or seabrook

il let them answer for me.

but thats ok if you think hes their #1 that makes no difference to me...leafs still have dion as their #1 and i dont even know who id say is there number 2.

franson? puke
polak? ugh..hes a second pairing guy at best if u ask me, but what do i know!

- Lucas Neilson

I agree Franson is probably not a #2, he's playing pretty well...Polak is a 3rd pairing PK guy IMO.

You're right he has taken some risk.

I know you weren't quoting me but I meant he doesn't take the risk in making moves like Nill in Dallas has done. Nonis wouldn't have moved Lupul, Gauthier and whatever else for Seguin. He probably wouldn't even make the call.

He spoke about the players not being safe in his press conference about Carlyle. If I were a player on his team I'd laugh at it. He doesn't make big moves.

- Aaron_85

the problem is, he's taken the stupidest kind of risk: high risk, low reward. what were Bolland and Clarkson ever going to bring to the Leafs? quality third line minutes and some leadership? that's not the kind of risk a GM takes. the biggest issue with Nonis is that there's no rhyme or reason to anything he does. he just seems to react to things. his moves in 2013 were a direct reaction to the game 7 meltdown. his moves in 2014 were a direct reaction to the last 15 games of 2014. he doesn't seem like he has the ability, as a manager, to take a step back and see the big picture. he's all about plugging leaks.

What is your criteria?

I think this list supports your point: there are very few true #1 defensemen. I agree Burns shouldn't have made that list, but OEL definitely belongs there.

- 1979AD

I would use Weber as a benchmark. Work off that. Look at Team Canada's d corps. Not sure if they would be considered all #1 by many on here.

If you are poor defensively, are, or should you be considered a #1 ?

seguin doesn't concern me. He's very similar to kessel in that he brings purely one way offense.

However, after watching Hamilton for about 15 full games this year..he's an absolute stud. He'd be our top Dman this year no doubt and plays a great 2 way game.

No one really lost this trade and burke can't be blamed for making it. I wouldn't have made it personally but alot of trades end up worse than this one.

- clark_griswold

What made it a horrible trade was the timing of it and the fact the team was terrible and should have been rebuilding. Instead of sucking and gathering a bunch of top picks, they trade them all away for kessel, just to be mediocre again.

You dont win with one superstar. Not only Seguin and Hamilton, they probably would have had a few more top 5 picks in the next couple years.

Terrible trade.

he said on contending teams... Minni's not.

But IMO Suter is the best all round Dman in the league and it isn't close.

Maybe i have spent to much time looking at it.

I agree (like i said i wouldn't have made it). Add that on to the signing Gerber which resulted in us moving down in the draft....imagine the possibilities.

Hamilton would look very good for us this year. If you haven't seen him play, i suggest you do. Kid is a horse

Can we get Jagr for cheap? It'd be fun to see Kessel-Kadri-Jagr on the top line for the rest of the season. He's been around too and could probably teach a thing or two.

I think if you play nearly half of every game for a team that dominates the standings, you have to be included even if you're known to be a defensive liability, like Kris Letang.

That would depend what your definition of #1 is. The following players average >25mns/game for contending teams:

Doughty
Weber
Josi (not a #1, but fits the criteria)
Keith
Letang
Pietrangelo
Subban

Candidates that don't fit that criteria include:

Karlsson
Giordano
E. Johnson

Yandle
Ekman-Larsson
Kronwall
Suter
Muzzin

Girardi
McDonagh
Chara
Hedman
Seabrook

- 1979AD

I would take all highlighted ahead of Dion at 7 per, and there are others as well, Dion is probably the 50th best d man in NHL...

Not suprising though. I know of 3 people who've had serious head injuries and another that died when I was growing up, and that was just in our collection of little towns around... not at all a large population.

Stunned they made bike helmets a law and ignored tobogganing for so long.
