Does Hextall Fire Berube during season or let him ride it out.
It may not be a bad idea to let new coach get a feel for some players going into next year.
I would like to see DeBoer or Paul Maclean

- 3flyerkids

No. My luck is they would start to actually play better and get us a mid draft pick instead of the top 5 it appears we are going. Dont screw that up!

Morin has not looked that good IMO. He is a seventh Dman and I just don't see him being NHL ready next year if he can't even crack the starting lineup of 20 year olds. It may take him a couple years...unless his injury has really set him back.
Lindblom has looked very good for Sweden, could be a 4th round steal

- 3flyerkids

Different circumstances but Giroux couldn't make the Olympic team despite being a great player. I'm not going to label Morin anything from the WJC results.

Coburn to Edm for Pitt's 1st.

Please let it happen.

- hereticpride

on a related note, how is david perron worth a first round pick? looks to me like he's a 40 point/year guy.....am i missing something? and if he is fetching a first, them surely matt read can fetch a second, right?

That going rate will be about $3M to $3.5M, absolutely for two seasons and possibly for a third. I don't like the cost but that's the reality because the market on defensemen is way out of whack.
- bmeltzer

The problem with that is you already have guys like him signed that you've hitched your wagon too....if you could move two of Grossmann, Coburn, Schenn or Macdonald then I think you offer a two year deal....three makes him unmovable if he struggles again....and the fFlyers have enough of them.

Might as well just keep Grossmann and Schenn and wave goodbye to Schultz then.
- Tomahawk

Yea Schultz is prob our best trade chip, maybe coburn. Sell sell sell

I'd fire him now, replace him with a clear interim tasked w/ strict developmental goals, then go through the process of finding a real replacement in the summer.

There's a few guys out there that are attractive. I'd wait for awhile, and even then, would probably promote Murray as interim, then find a permanent guy in spring
- Jsaquella

Berube was not Hextall's hire. I would hope he has an idea of what type of coach he would like to put into place. DeBoer really hasn't had the chance to coach a team with legit guys who can score ( G and Jake). He has experience in the East coaching teams that played D first since they were not offensive teams and he managed to get to a Cup.

He put up 28 goals last year. Had some off season surgery and struggled to start the season. With an aßist machine like Crosby he'll be a great addition for them.

Read could possibly get a late 2nd. Perron was just struggling to generate points whereas Read firmly seems to have his head up his rear end.

As I see it, the Flyers have a choice. They can continue to run with the current defense, which we know isn't good enough, or sell pieces off, find a solid guy or two in free agency on a short term deal, and continue to develop the kids.

Due to Holmgren's short sighted deal for MacDonald, the Flyers don't have a second rounder. They need more picks to continue restocking the system. I can't agree with anyone who feels the Flyers can't replace 3 or 4 of their current top six with similar options.

I'm looking at 2-3 years. If that means a couple down years, so be it.

seriously... if the idea of keeping guys like ghost down in the minors was "development" then why have a guy perceivably stunting the growth of your young guys who are on the big squad?

Yup, unless Holmgren or a placeholder like Paddock is willing to coach out the string, you roll with Berube til April and then bring in your guy.
- BiggE

Here's my first prediction for 2015..... Berube will be fired tonight. Replaced by Murray.

DeBoer is my choice. My only concern is how much of a hand he had in handling Larsson. Because he's been handled terribly. With a bunch of young D men in our system I find that a little concerning.

System wise I think he coaches a very strong game.

Giroux not making Olympic team was pure BS. Mrs Crosby's input was key into that decision

Emery

I'd be trying like hell to move these guys for picks. Anything you can get within reason. I badly want to include AMac in that list, I just don't see it happening though.

Perron isn't a 40 point player, he has more skill than that.

3 to 3.5 per season? If so, I trade him around the TDL, tell him we'd love to have him back next year, see what sort of competition there is for his services, then sign him for around 2 to 2.5 per.

You know, when I get the GM job.

- wolfhounds

Yes... per season. That's the nature of today's UFA defenseman market, where even the Deryk Engellands of the NHL command close to $3M per season on a 3-year deal.

The benchmark for a Brooks Orpik type became the $5.5M cap hit he gt on a five-year and Matt Niskanen cashed in one big season for a $5.75M on a seven-year, frontloaded deal. Meanwhile, it cost the Flyers a $5M cap hit on a six-year term to get Andrew MacDonald to pre-empt his UFA status rather than getting, say $5.15M or $5.2M on the open market.

This goes on leaguewide. It's not just the Flyers. The Flyers, unfortunately, put themselves in a position where virtually their entire defense had to be brought it from the outside and they are all now veterans (i.e., inflated salaries) yet none are bonafide top-pairing players.

And replace them with whom and at what cost? Therein lies Hextall's problem.

I wonder what sort of two for one value you can get out of the Schenns? Its probably ugly but I would listen to offers...
