That going rate will be about $3M to $3.5M, absolutely for two seasons and possibly for a third. I don't like the cost but that's the reality because the market on defensemen is way out of whack.

I'd have to say thanks but no thanks then

Might as well just keep Grossmann and Schenn and wave goodbye to Schultz then.

3 to 3.5 per season? If so, I trade him around the TDL, tell him we'd love to have him back next year, see what sort of competition there is for his services, then sign him for around 2 to 2.5 per.

You know, when I get the GM job.

No, I mean it. The Phantoms are in the playoff hunt so leave em be. If they want to axe Berube before April, bring in whomever to finish out the season and get your guy after.

I'm fine with not re-signing Schultz. What I will say, though, is that he hasn't so much "turned a corner" as gotten back to the way he typically played during the Minnesota years of his career. There's no reason why, if healthy, he can't continue to do that for several more years. I will also say that for every Schultz that works out, there are two Bruno Gervais or Kurtis Foster projects that do not work out.
- bmeltzer

Yes, they rarely work out. My point is that it's a premature, imo, to say that Schultz is back to his Minnesota years.

But the Flyers will certainly need some vets to pair with the kids next season.

I'd like to continue to overpay for aging, slow defensemen. It's worked out so well.

You want plodding dmen, we got em!
Need a pp qb? Mark Streit says hello!
We also have a special going on overpriced vet forwards on long term deals: Buy one, get the 2nd one FREE!!

So come on down to Flyertown, just ask for Ron!

Remember, all players must go!!!!!!

True

It's pretty hard to win with a bunch of 4,5 & 6 dmen, a 2nd line that doesn't score and a 3rd line weighed down with RJ Umberger and the guy that used to be Matt Read and the leagues worst PK. However, Berube still needs to go at seasons end. I want a head coach who is better than basically adequate.

So...we all went in to this season with O&B colored glasses then having any other than mediocre expectations. We let the front office fool us with "I like our team". This is absolute garbage. [/img]

As I see it, the Flyers have a choice. They can continue to run with the current defense, which we know isn't good enough, or sell pieces off, find a solid guy or two in free agency on a short term deal, and continue to develop the kids.

Due to Holmgren's short sighted deal for MacDonald, the Flyers don't have a second rounder. They need more picks to continue restocking the system. I can't agree with anyone who feels the Flyers can't replace 3 or 4 of their current top six with similar options.

I'm looking at 2-3 years. If that means a couple down years, so be it.

Morin has not looked that good IMO. He is a seventh Dman and I just don't see him being NHL ready next year if he can't even crack the starting lineup of 20 year olds. It may take him a couple years...unless his injury has really set him back.
Lindblom has looked very good for Sweden, could be a 4th round steal

Not me. I didn't expect a playoff season. Neither did several others. At best they were a bubble team, who if everything went right, might grab a wildcard

At some point they have to stop overpaying for 3rd pair level dmen that are fracking up their cap structure. They have 3 guys off the scrap heap in schultz, MDZ and CC that are capable of bringing more than AMac and GrossmanN...I'd roll the dice on yrs scrap heap instead of overpaying.

On another note, I don't think morin is ready and could def benefit from a yr of AHL time at least.

I'm just not sure he's the guy you want around, stewarding the kids any longer:

- He basically did the hockey equivalent of driving Akeson out into the middle of the woods to "set him free",
- He's got Coots buried up to his neck in defensive responsibilities (to facilitate Vinny's marshmallow minutes),
- He more or less bought Gus his ticket to Russia,
- Baby Schenn is still bouncing between lines and positions,
- Ghost was barely used at all in his first cup of coffee,
- MDZ went from a smashing reclamation success into a spare part used at forward,
- Nobody is more lost to the team than Luke Schenn.

- Tomahawk

Pretty much. Systemically & in terms of record, I don't blame him. But in terms of usage, development and being able to optimize his roster, ugh.

Does Hextall Fire Berube during season or let him ride it out.
It may not be a bad idea to let new coach get a feel for some players going into next year.
I would like to see DeBoer or Paul Maclean

Then it's time to walk away. Signing third pair guys to $3.5mm deals is part of the problem. Using that much cap space on depth players is part of the issue.

There's a few guys out there that are attractive. I'd wait for awhile, and even then, would probably promote Murray as interim, then find a permanent guy in spring
