05-06, they were 27th. The worst season next year, they were 9th

Taking a look at the standings... If things hold the same I'm looking at Nashville and Winnipeg. Two teams that will have a tough road ahead of them in the western playoffs.

I wouldn't mind something like
Read to Winnipeg for a 2nd
Rinaldo to Nashville for a 3rd or 4th(he is the kind of guy you go "he got what at the deadline?")
Coburn to Edm for Pitt's 1st

That gives us a ton of room for moves at the draft.

- hereticpride

Pitt just traded it's 1st for Perron.

To my eye, it looks like there's way too much movement on the PK -- especially at the top of the box. It completely loses its integrity.

The pk coach should be fired. If thats Lappy then tell him to pack his bags. They should at least be effective at pk with the roster they have. Slow plodding dmen should be good at that, plus an elite pker in coots and other forwards who have been effective at it

That stuff is cyclical but that's it exactly. They don't even look like they're close to killing them.

By definition, you are at a disadvantage. Everyone gets that at some point, goals are going in. But the fact that they look this incompetent indicates a coaching failure, since this same roster has been able to kill them

They changed something. Something got changed, and it's (frank)ed

Positionally, it's a disaster. They start chasing puck, lose their coverage and start to leave wide open gaps in great scoring areas.

They try to do this thing where the two F's at the top of the box are playing this dynamic zone and it's just stupid the way it opens up huge E-W passing lanes every time.

No, I mean it. The Phantoms are in the playoff hunt so leave em be. If they want to axe Berube before April, bring in whomever to finish out the season and get your guy after.
- BiggE

I agree, my concern is at least having the NHL level players be able to put in an honest WELL MANAGED effort, and not have the players in shock from Neanderthal coaching for another 3 months. The team is going nowhere so at least mold them properly, dont damage them and clear the poison gas from the locker room

Oh yeah, Coburn is playing like he wants to be sat down or traded, maybe he is the one driving the on ice tank.

Yeah, then the D are collapsing low and there a huge gap in the middle of the square, perfect for open shots in the slot and one timers.

They had all top 4 D men out, & looked no worse than us, I think that says something.

Yes, even a fresh Paul Maurice is a better coach than Berube.
Of course as mentioned on HNIC they have a lot of BIG and FAST players up front.
They were discussing that in the mold of the Kings
Its easier to work hard and smart when you have size and speed.

This team has no identity.
I wonder if the players ever get up in the morning and hate to going to work, knowing what stupidity awaits them at the rink for practice

Depending on what they do this summer, 2016 is possible. But 2017 is only a couple years away.

Personnel is certainly more glaring at this juncture.

It's hard to have a solid read on Hextall. He's said the right things, hasn't made a panic trade and IMO had a really good draft last summer.

But he hasn't cut deadwood, and his biggest move (Trading Hartnell for Umberger) has been a definite loss in terms of on ice impact. Jury is still out. We'll have a much better picture after the TDL and draft and how he utilizes FA this summer

What I don't understand is this team was very competitive last season, they had decent special teams and some key goaltending. They didn't make huge changes over the summer, what happened?

They had awesome special teams. Both PP & PK in top 5 or so.

They were very mediocre at 5 on 5, though and this year the PK has been awful.

They really miss Kimmo Timonen. he played heavy minutes on both units. There's also been a serious dip in the level of play from several players-Matt Read, Braydon Coburn most notably. Nick Grossmann was very solid in the 2nd half of last season and he's been bad. Andrew MacDonald has been most bad. Steve Mason has played well overall, but not as well as he did last year in the early going.

Yeah Heart for Bumberger was a terrible trade. While Hearts didn't put up huge points, he was a motivational guy and versatile.
