Franson is larger, can shoot, score and hit and has 5 seasons over 20 points with a high of 33, where Tanev can't do those things and has never scored more then 17 points. Also he did that on the Laughs who have been worse as a team then Vancouver.

It is based on last contract of 2mil. Almost 50% raise from current.
Franson went from 2 to 3.3 but is a UFA at the end of the season. Tanev is still an RFA.

You forgot the most important reason fransen will get 5.5. It is Nonuts that will negotiate the contract. He is the same guy that signed Clarkson, Phaneuf, Lupul, Bozak and Phil the Thrill to such cap friendly deals.

I definitely don't see the Canucks starting next season without a top 4 UFA Dman. Im not so sure about them acquiring one through trade this season. Maybe depth or prospect... but not likely a ready top 4.

You said it yourself our D prospects suck. Until that is fixed , one needs to pay a premium

I just have a hard time giving Tanev big money long term... they guy is just a reliable defender... does nothing special and isn't large enough to clear the net. If he ever gets anything over 4.5 mill I think it will look like an albatross later on.... I have nothing against Tanev just don't respect him at all offensively. I think he is a 3-dman with zero PP time. What is that worth?
