To hear that in hindsight you would have hoped for Vancouver to defeat the New York Rangers in the 7th Game 1994, it puts chills down my spine. I actually cheered for Calgary and Edmonton in there most recent game 7's. In the moment I actually did and was disappointed. I felt in game 6 Calgary was robbed by the disallowed goal in OT that crossed the line. And Edmonton losing there starting goalie was a huge blow to be sure probably costing them there 6th.

I think you guys need 3 things:

1/ Gotta have McDavid. Have too. You're done for this year, may as well go into tank mode.

2/ Need to clean house of any ex-alumni. Say what you want, these guys are toxic. NONE of them have got it right. You fluked one year and a cinderella run to the SC. You need someone who has no attachment to the team. None. Someone who isnt scared to make a move and someone who truly gets it. I think you guys missed the bus on guys like Tim Murray, Jim Benning etc.

3/ Get a real goalie. You need a legit goalie. Not a backup who you hope can be a starter.

I would really start to be worried that guys like Hall, Eberle, RNH etc are just gonna give up and want out...then you're in bigger trouble.

that last paragraph about the abusive relationship is great. It's sad but true.

I don't see how tanking at this point helps the culture of the team at all, and I sorta feel that the importance of team culture at this juncture might outstrip the importance of having a shot at McDavid. I realize this is a pretty contentious point.

At the very least, I don't think it squares with the larger idea of cleaning house and starting anew with bold outside voices. Tanking is more of the same, isn't it?

Then there's Hall, Eberle and RNH. I don't see how tanking for McDavid convinces them that this is a team that wants to win, or perhaps more importantly hates losing.

Hey guys. I'm going to be helping Yeti with the moderation of these blogs for the indeterminate future.

I hope you all will think less of me and call me a nark. That would really brighten my day.

But seriously: my advice to regular posters here would be as always not to take the bait. If trolls come in and you retaliate, you're both going over the Reichenbach falls. That's a Holmes reference. Get used to it.

one can marginally cheer for another team in the playoffs. as an oiler fan if uve wanted to be involved whatsoever for the last 2 months of the season during the last 8 years, u kinda had to get invested in another team.
for me, mostly the sharks and/or the bruins. an underdog here or there.

this can all be accepted as long as it didn't turn into anything real and u were able to abandon them quickly and without regret. and the same depth of love never approached what it is for the oilers.

as far as the cheering for losing; I can never ever actually cheer against them mid game. the final meaningless game agaianst Vancouver last season where they lost the draft spot with a win was great. I wanted them to pour it on.
but after the game, when they do inevitably lose, there was some solace in the big picture. although I haven't truly felt that way since nuge's year, with connor mcjesus on the horizon, im getting that way again....pathetic

I know exactly how you feel.

I hope the Oilers get the 5th overall pick and everyone cheering for us to get McDavid poops their pants.

That's my oilers confession.

What will be interesting to see is what the league does with the drafting rules if the Oilers get the first overall yet again.

Nothing I'm sure, and honestly I don't think they should do anything.

As bogus as it would seem if Edmonton did actually get the first overall even after the most recent changes to the lottery odds, it's still well within the possibilities of fate for them to end up with yet another one.

Clearly the last 3 have done little to get them out of the cellar. 1st rounders or not, the worst teams should indeed be getting the best chance at the best overall prospect, repeat winners or not.

That being said, I could listen to an argument presented about putting a cap on first overalls for say 2 or 3 consecutive seasons.

reduced odds on winning the lottery based on how many 1st over alls (or a combination of Top 3/5/10) picks you have had over a set amount of time.

I don't think it wold be a bad idea. If for no other reason than giving the other bottom clubs a little better chance each time.

Edmonton must be a rare example though of consecutive top picks without the payoff. I didn't research it, making an assumption because I don't remember the last time a team had 3 straight.
