Ducks just burned a 3rd rounder for Eric Brewer...

Defense is expensive

Yeah, apparently it was a 3rd from the Oilers so that's gonna be top 5 most likely. Not bad to get a top 70 pick for a depth d-man with an expiring deal.

Yzerman basically traded Brewer, + late 2nd for Garrison + early 3rd.

So whats better spending a 3rd on a 5-6 vet Dman or a 3rd on 21 year old B grade prospect?

Depends on your team but I'd probably say the B prospect

Matthias - 26
Kassian - 23

I was (and still am) a fan of tanking for a great draft pick but if the canucks are going to try and stay competitive while retooling then I wouldn't move Kassian just yet. I would actually keep both. If you're going to make the playoffs you need big, strong, skilled guys.

Kassian is a headcase, but if WD can figure him out then he's worth keeping. Give WD a season with him...

Ya I disagree with you there, if you look at their corsi, Kassian is killing them both at -2 compared to -25 for Matthias and -35 for Richardson.

Which if you don't know what corsi is, takes all shot attempts for minus shot attempts against while on the ice and is a decent indicator of whether you are getting outplayed on a regular basis.

Kassian will be fine and this team can't afford to move out any size up front.

- belcherbd

corsi? Never heard of it... is that like a players trait? Similar to having truculence?

This has been his trademark for as long as I have watched him play.
He is not a guy to make the safe play. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't

Yup, he is just not a safe hockey player. As He Who Must Not Be Named said he is a gunslinger. That is why I find him and Sbisa so similar, though I actually think Sbisa could end up being better than KB

Just remember how many years it took Bertuzzi to hit his stride -7.

There is no way I would give up on Kassian, this is precisely the knee-jerk type of reaction which impedes franchises from improving. I don't care if he has to play on the 3 or 4 line for the next two years until WD figures out the best way to get him going. there's no way I would trade him.

Unfair comparison IMO. Bertuzzi was not a complete defensive liability while he took his time to find his offensive game. Kassian has some offensive skill, but kid is a complete liability away from the puck. Once you reach the NHL, I think it's fair to expect a certain amount of defensive responsibility from all your players. I hope he figures it out soon, cause I'm starting to get impatient with him.

I agree that Kassian needs work on both sides of the puck; however, I think he is ahead of where Bertuzz was before he managed to 'figure' things out. Bertuzzi's plus minus (before he 'broke' out was a brutal -65 ). I haven't checked Kassian's totals but I'm fairly certain he is nowhere near that number.

Again, further patience is required or we are going to let a potential power forward go for virtually nothing
