Buffalo has become the place in recent years where NHL careers go to die. I'm not sure there's a player in the league that could use a change of scenery more than Hodgson.

Hodgson needs to be defensively responsible, won't happen.

AV/Gillis made sure he was eating up a lot of easy minutes to pad his stats though, Gillis wanted to sell high on him all along. I actually understand the timing of the trade, since they had 2 choices if they held onto him:

1) Keep giving him easy minutes, instead of giving those O-Zone starts to the Sedins, potentially hurting the team in the playoffs
2) Take away those minutes and risk him getting exposed in the playoffs or having AV bench him, hurting his trade value.

I think Gillis was afraid that he wouldn't be able to swing the trade after the playoffs, which I don't think would have been the case since Kassian wasn't exactly lighting up the NHL either.

I'm not defending Gillis, but this was likely his thinking.
