What the hell happened to Cody Hodgson?

Guy practically dropped off the radar.

2 points this season in 22 games.

Buffalo has become the place in recent years where NHL careers go to die. I'm not sure there's a player in the league that could use a change of scenery more than Hodgson.

Take a look at this.

Sorry to steal your thunder Carol, I know you said you would discuss it tomorrow but I want to talk about it now.

I'm glad to see Junior hockey taking headshot seriously but it would be interesting to see how many games that hit would fetch in the NHL. It seems to be I see a hit like that every game.

This is the mother of all headshots. I can't believe JR got up after that hit. It does say something about how the game was played and how players reacted to these types of hits back then.

In hindsight, losing Hodgson was no big loss, but I still think Gillis could have got more for Hodgson than he did.

At the end of the video did you see him move his jaw around? If that hit happened today the player would be taken off on a stretcher.

When people used to talk about 'hockey tough' you can see what they were talking about.

I'd argue that Hodgson was a huge loss. The way he was playing for us that season and the scoring depth that he provided was instantly gutted after that trade and certainly not made up for by Kassian.

Whatever becomes of him afterwards is almost irrelevant IMO as that was a key Cup Contending year for us.

Yep, or watch any game Scott Stevens or Claude Lemuiex played in. If you survived a hit from one of those guys, props to ya. Cause many guys didn't.

AV/Gillis made sure he was eating up a lot of easy minutes to pad his stats though, Gillis wanted to sell high on him all along. I actually understand the timing of the trade, since they had 2 choices if they held onto him:

1) Keep giving him easy minutes, instead of giving those O-Zone starts to the Sedins, potentially hurting the team in the playoffs
2) Take away those minutes and risk him getting exposed in the playoffs or having AV bench him, hurting his trade value.

I think Gillis was afraid that he wouldn't be able to swing the trade after the playoffs, which I don't think would have been the case since Kassian wasn't exactly lighting up the NHL either.

I'm not defending Gillis, but this was likely his thinking.

Do you think that AV might have something to do with Hodgson's success for the short time he was here? People did talk about 'protected minutes' and hodgson being placed into favourable position so he could excel.

He's got a great shot but he does have some glaring weaknesses. And that $4.25m cap hit is

While I don't discount that he got protected minutes, he also displayed some serious skill when playing in Van as well as some pretty good moments in Buffalo when he first got there and last year.

I'm also not willing to give Gillis credit that he was " selling high", I think he thought he was making a good hockey trade and giving up a 1 dimensional small but skilled forward for a bigger, gritty top 6 forward. The only reason we heard all about how Hodgson was such a pain in the ass etc, was Gillis trying to make himself look like a genius when the fans were pissed about him moving the golden boy.

I don't know about you but when two parties have a disagreement and one comes out blaming it all on the other and the other says nothing, I usually assume the former is full of poop.

Gillis did the same with Malholtra and Luongo.

I said this at the time and will say it again. AV had to protect Cody. He's not a bad defensive player. He actually refuses to back check. I'm not sure how you can be expected to have a contending team with a guy like that. Guy belongs in edm.

Both of those guys said publicly how they felt. Those were not quiet situations.

As for Hodgson, there were rumours for years that he was discontented. There was very little to say when he got moved because he got what he wanted. It would be like Kesler coming out and bad mouthing the team now. There's no gain in it.

I disagree, Malhotra didn't say anything other than I'm disappointed after Gillis shut him down. He could of easily of come out saying that it shouldn't be up to Gillis if doctors clear him to play, he could of suggested like many thought that it was based as much on adding some financial space at the trade deadline as it was on his concern for Manny's health.

After Luongo refused to waive for Toronto (pulled during game I believe), Gillis also made comments squarely putting the blame on Luo. Luo only recently admitted that he wouldn't waive for Toronto, during the whole debacle he didn't take any shots at Gillis, only his own contract.

No other GM in the league has gone out of their way to discredit a player after trading them like Gillis did with Hodgson.

Burke with his "Drive him to the airport" comment about someone.
Fletcher on Sundin when Sundin refused to waive his NTC.
Can't remember the GM from Columbus's name at the time, but he slammed Carter pretty hard after he traded him to LA.
