Last December the team won 10 of 13 games, had two shoot-out losses and lost once to Dallas. That's 22 of a possible 26 points, and we still finished 6th last. Point being, the season is long, they've gotta maintain what they're doing to be a playoff team.

I was a real defender or Gillis while he was here. I drank the cool-aid and asked for more. What changed for me was Marco Sturm. Gillis showed then that he had no plan.

In the end, we won;t remember him for 2011 but his treatment of the goalies will always be his legacy.

That and always picking up poop rentals at the deadline. I don;t even remember half of them... who was the guy who trademarked a tinted visor and and only played one more season to market the damn thing?

- Beatle_john

That was Eric Weinrich...and it was a Nonis move. That same year we picked up Keith Carney, Sean Brown and Mika Noronen at the 2006 deadline. Fat lot of good those goofs did.
Frankly I think Nonuts was more famous for spewing our picks away at the TDL. Gillis did most of his damage in the off-season...

Okay here is my second attempt:
Last year before December:
13-10-5
31points (28 games played)
This year before December:
15-6-1
31 points (22 games played)

6 games in hand and still have the same points. Don't listen to him boys were still getting the presidents trophy.

Now if we win 4 out of the 6, We will qualify for playoffs, but that doesn't matter were going for it all this year, Presidents trophy or bust.

In the spirit of bashing Torts / gillis I blame them for the collapse ...didn't have the depth you do this year so torts was playing guys too much and in the wrong situations ...your stars just ran out of gas ....willy rolls 4 lines ...I think they will be ok if the hamhuis injury isn't a major factor ...look like a playoff team to me

With Sanchez I'm not sure. If he throws less than 1 INT I'll say yes. I miss Foles.

Foles throws a better deep ball but doesn't he still end up with the same numbers yards, TD, INT wise ?

Sanchez loves him some Matthews
Foles is more of a Maclin guy

I don't know, I just feel like Foles is a better player. He as having a "meh" year and yet people are saying Sanchez is playing well and the numbers are similar. The o-line is also healthier now for Sanchez, Foles was playing behind backup linemen for a few games there.

I wonder who they selected with those picks.

Even this season there was still someone defending that trade. Closet Gillis fans are still lurking. Even someone today said Gillis made more good moves than bad... Not so sure(im lying, Im sure)... maybe if you count all the moves that were not bad as good instead of calling them irrelevant, lateral, or yet to be determined.

I think a more realistic statement would be that not all his moves were bad.

He messed the team up with his inability to deal with his counterparts, poor drafting, trades. Backed it up with his arrogant persona as he set the team back years development wise.

Torts as right about one thing challenging Gillis's inability to improve the roster. Most GM's probably hated his guts and wouldn't deal with him, the rest (like Dale Talon) just ripped him off. All the 2nd round picks he gave up for nothing, a 1rst for Ballard the list goes on. Gillis never could have pulled off what Benning did, he didn't have the respect, knowledge or personality.

Did anyone see TSN's picks on league MVP? I think it was a split between pekka rinne and mark giordano.

How can you pick a goalie and not even mention Miller?

How did Dale Talon rip him off? I don't think anyone won the trades between FLA and Van. If anything I think Markstrom and Matthias have turned out pretty good. Markstrom has been lights out in the AHL. Matthias is an adiquate 4th liner that will benefit playing under WD.

Other trades we had with FLA we lost Sturm, Samuelsson, Shirokov, Oberg, Zimmerman, Hordichuk, Bernier, and Grabner. No big deal. Of the guys we gained Higgins has been the best player by far. The Panthers did get Howden with our 2010 1st round pick but it's not like he's had a positive effect on the Panthers.

I hate Gillis as much as anyone but if we are going to criticize then we need to be realistic.

Luongo's worked out great for them and they dumped two bad contracts on us. But I do agree that the pieces we sent them(Howden included) have sucked. We also got Higgins which was a great trade.
