Exactly why you try to get an equivalent NHL ready forward rather than a reclamation project, overpriced rental. - YouMeAndDupuis9
Try, yes. But it's just not out there. As I said, Detroit and St. Louis already have top end defensive prospects. Most teams actually do, which is kind of the flaw in the old Shero plan.
Teams are desperate for veteran defensemen, not prospects. |

See, I prefer Malkin on the wing. Possession often starts by winning faceoffs. Malkin still just isn't any good at faceoffs. Too often, Malkin loses a faceoff and then his line spends half their shift chasing play instead of attacking.
I also don't think this system fits Malkin the way it fits Crosby. Malkin doesn't seem to know what to do on the breakout. I've seen him struggle to fit in on the breakout for a couple shifts, and then he'll go classic Geno, come back behind the goal and grab the puck, and just try to take it himself. Some of that could be linemates, but he's not as good in small areas as Crosby and Sutter are, he's more of a north/south, stay in your lane kind of player.
And Bennett seems to like the left wing just fine - it's pretty much all he's every played in the NHL at this point. - hardnosed
I dont think any system Malkin would play well in. He just does his own thing and his wingers get lost at times. Not to mention that a good center helps out behind his own net. |

I wonder if Martin would be willing to go to Dallas. That team needs some defensive help really bad and I'd bet a team like that would be willing to give up a first for him. Cap wise I'm not sure how it would work, but to me it's a possible scenario. With so many teams looking for D help and not many teams willing to give any, Martin could pull in a nice haul.
Pens could always hold onto the Stars 1st rounder and use their own and a D prospect to grab a top 6 guy. It seems like the cost of dmen is skyrocketing and the price of forwards is coming down |

Then by that logic, Martin could land said young winger? |

With the talk of everyone wanting a defenseman, I'm starting to think Martin can land a lot. |

Combine that with the fact that he has played exceptionally well lately and his value could be much more than anticipated.
Any chance we revisit Anaheim as a potential suitor?
Martin for Cogliano + --> this would give us the same effect as Vermette, we have a capaable 3rd line center if we want to move Sutter to the top 6 OR try Cogs in the top 6 where he has the speed to keep up with Sid/Geno
Martin for DSP or Silfverberg --> I think viable young guys to take a chance on
Martin + for Nick Ritchie --> ok this one is a reach. not NHL ready and the value is probably way off but, man, he is a tailor made fit for our long term needs. Maybe do a trade based around those two players then we flip other assets for an NHL ready winger. Just thinking out loud. |

I have no idea, but I would assume Martin would want to go to a contender, but the pens would only trade him to somewhere in the west. Sharks, ducks, Avalanche, stars, and even the blues make some sense, but who knows

In each of those scenarios, trading Martin decreases the chances of winning a Cup in June.
That's why he's not going to be traded. |

I dont think we could get Nick Ritchie, but his older brother Brett may be obtainable from the Stars.

Not sure if he will or not. They only have about 4mil in cap with Dupes out. Martin in theory has the biggest chance of a return along with a 1st. |

But by how much? and how do we know that Harrington and what we get for trading him, by seasons end, couldn't provide what Martin brings to the table.
Fact is, having Martin on this team hasn't lead to the Pens winning the cup yet.

I was hesitant for trading Martin at the beginning of the year, but mattaa has gotten better, ehrhoff is doing well, and I've heard nothing but praise about Harrington and pouliot. |

Next year:
Letang-Ehroff
Maata-Despress
Harrington-Bortz-Pouliott-Scuds
Not bad IMO if Harrington and Pouliott live up to 70% of their expectations. |

I think that is an unfair way to look at it.
But I do agree that while our defense will be downgraded if we trade Martin, we will still have a nice defense with a chance to catch lightning in a bottle with one of the young guys.
Not having peak performances from Sid and Geno, and scoring depth has been the reason we lost in the past. |

I agree. Stars are very high on him, but they are very desperate for D.
Oh and the Cogliano thing...I'm probably biased, but he's one of my favorite players and I think he'd mesh well here with our system/stars. |

I just wouldn't trade Martin. Don't know what else to say. He's a key cog on the PP and against opposing stars. 35 goals allowed, and he's had a huge part of that.
The defense is playing too well right now for me to make that big of a change.

The Isles are much improved and with Boychuk on the back line they are more solid on D than I can even remember. Although Boychuk was hurt earlier in the week and may not be 100%. I can still remember when the Isles with Kasperitis drove us out of the playoffs. Si now that the Isles are improving the rivalry will intensify. Let's go Pens!
Do it for Duper! Do it! |

Okay, after that quote, you and I can be friends now.
I'm not totally against keeping Martin at all. But IF the return is right I would do it.
But our offense in the playoffs has been quite bad, so if we dont "screw with that" we can keep expecting more of the same.
How about these blockbusters:
Martin & Pouliot for Cogliano, N. Ritchie, 3rd
Martin, Harrington, 3rd for Palmieri and Ritchie
Prob unrealistic but just throwing sh*t against the wall to see if it sticks. |
