Flyers had 7 ES shots through the first two periods. Pretty sad. It's one thing to get outplayed by a team that is better then you are, if the effort is there. Fla had 5 regular forwards missing from the lineup, and were playing a 7th defenseman at one forward spot. And yet the Flyers still played large chunks of the game hemmed in their own zone. To a team that has an anemic offense. And no insult intended. If the Flyers worked, and skated with the same effort that Florida does, Flyers would be a much better team.

Nothing against Emery, I really like him as a goaltender and the fire is evident. However if the Flyers are really serious about Mason being their number 1 of the future, they need to put him in the best position to continue developing. Consistent ice time.

It wasn't too long ago that he found his way out of the Blair Witch Project in Columbus.

is that what you think it primarily boils down to? effort? i honestly dont really get it. i have no idea what you guys are going to do game to game. i still think there are some obvious flaws with the roster/mix that have been addressed a bunch, but still. its not enough to result in such continuously volatile results

It's brutal. The effort from the team in front of the goaltender was pathetic. And all they can write, is a goalie story?

I wish I could tell. But this team is an every other game team. Did they think that Fla was just going to lay down, because they knew they were missing a bunch of players? This is not that young of a team. They should know they need to show up. I truly believe that when this team skates and works, they are a good team. But when you only skate and work half the time, are you a good team? Last night's game to me, isn't about roster flaws. Or line combos. It's about coming to the rink to play.

An already poopty 5V5 teams, adds more poopty 5V5 players to the lineup (Vinny), while boosting the icetime of scrubs (VDV, Rinaldo), while cutting the playing time of guys who were actually driving play recently (Raffl, Bellemare).

The result wasn't surprising -- not exactly rocket science.

Im off for today, first day off tomorrow in 7. Just a thought here though. If they only show effort every other game, or work hard every other game.

Wouldn't that in a long term and big picture view make them a bad team as a whole? Good night and good hockey hooligans.

Lecavalier is not a poor 5 on 5 player. Lecavalier was actually one of their better forwards last night, which isn't saying much. But for a guy who just missed a couple of weeks, he played fine. If Rinaldo and Vandevelde played a few less minutes, think that changes the outcome?
Bellemare did not have a good game last night.

Last night's game wasn't about a few minutes ice time here or there. It was about the total team effort, player to player.

Plus they went up against a team that has been pretty good at 5 on 5 this season. Florida has given up the fewest ES goals in the NHL this season. The Flyers just don't execute at times. How many times is an outlet pass off by 2 or 3 feet? How often does a defenseman get the puck, and his only pass is to go to his partner? How often do they dump and chase when they have a clear path to carry in?

yeah i understand. the parallels between a lot of the pens and flyers mental issues are glaring. unfortunately for us both, it takes playing the pens for the flyers to shake off that monkey.

i think the flyers have a good deal of talent on the team, but the mix is off and they are lacking in certain areas that pretty much requires effort from all involved in order to utilize that talent.

i really think berube is clinging to the same type of junk that killed bylsma. we disagree on the evaluation of 2 players though, vinny and rinaldo. i understand why the coach may feel compelled to make things work around vinny. you have to work with what you have. but he does gum a lot of things up to me. and i realize i dislike him, but i have a hard time seeing what rinaldo brings.

To me, the roster issues and the mix, is what would keep them from truly competing for the cup if they're in the playoffs and running on all cylinders. As they play the better teams, their flaws are going to do them in.
But those roster issues weren't the problem last night. They simply didn't play. And I could nitpick on the coach and show a bias and single out a player I don't like. But is that really the issue. Flyers had one decent line overall last night. And that really didn't happen until the 3rd period. Before that, the entire team was just going through the motions. That's not about Rinaldo, or a roster issue.
Rinaldo and the 4th line didn't play well yesterday. But Rinaldo has actually had a solid season overall.
I'd have to have some more detail about the junk part, to form an opinion on that.
