Any reason Jagr doesn't get the publicity anymore? Sure the media makes it a big deal everytime he plays the pens. But guys like Teemu Selanne seemed to get way more press. Unless that was simply because last year was his retirement parade. |

This is it exactly. Jagr has stated (albeit probably in jest) that he wants to play until 50. If Jagr makes a video where he states "this is it." Expect much more fanfare than Selanne got. |

If he wanted nostalgia he'd have signed a couple years ago. New Jersey also won't be sellers any time soon. |

I think that whole "I'm dying" thing still sticks in people's craw. - 87_71_11_29
I think a lot of the hatred is from Crosby era fans. I don't know how anyone who watched Jagr in the 1999 playoffs almost single handily beat the Devils while playing on one leg can hate the guy or question his effort.
He definitely has his personality quirks, and things got messy in the bankruptcy years, but when your salary is getting deferred, and other players are basically getting sold off, it's hard to blame how he acted. |

Disappointed he didn't come back but not surprised. He was awesome for the Pens! I always think of how happy he was in December of 2000; tough to beat that. |

He's a UFA next year and I really think he will take a hard look at finishing his career with the pens. |

Good point, I didn't think about his contract. I hope your right! I'd come up for his first game just to witness the reactions from the many, many fans who constantly booed him. |

Jagr, nothing but respect and praise for that man.
One of the five greatest offensive players in NHL history. |

My ideal situation with Jagr would be for him to get traded here at the deadline or sign next year, the Pens win the cup, Jagr retires on top, and the Penguins hang another Stanley Cup banner and #68 into the rafters on the same night. That would be awesome. |

I dislike Jagr and I grew up watching him play in the 90's. I think the way he left Pittsburgh was incredibly rude and unprofessional. I understand the team was doing him no favors and he probably was dying here. I understand at that point his talent was wasted and he had helped guide us to 2 cups and given years to this team.
But youre still a professional athlete. You signed a contract and youre getting paid millions of dollars to play a sport for a living. Too bad if you dont like the direction the team is going. Tell the GM you want a trade... not the media and certainly not the fans who idolize you. |

I feel like that falls more on the fans putting a person on a pedestal. I disagree with how people idolize celebrities and professional athletes, and get so mad when they make mistakes. Entertainment? Yes. Exciting to watch? Yes. Idols? Hardly. They are still human and make mistakes, maybe his choice of words wasn't exactly the smartest, but who cares? If that's how he felt, that's how he felt, so be it. No sense in holding a grudge on a guy I've never personally known. |

Everyone wants the Pens to get younger at the wings yet still hope that a 43 year old player returns to the team someday.

Never booed Jagr or would have had any reason to dislike him until the year he signed with Philly. And NOT because he signed with them but because of how that all went down.
Of course the public perception of what happened there may not be accurate...but on more than one occasion...and by more than one source (if I recall correctly) it was mentioned that Lemieux was very unhappy about how that negotiation fell apart and Jagr ended up with Philly. |

I think the misconception with that statement is that they want them to get younger for contract/value sake, IE:Not an older Kunitz/Dupuis 5 year deal. Jagr for 1 season or 2 seasons at a reasonable price (2.5-3 mil) isn't exactly a bad idea. I mean, have you seen the guy play? Horny-Sid-Jagr along the boards and in the o-zone... that puck is staying there.. for a long time. |
