This is why I'm entirely for not trading Martin. Martin is very important to the back end and he makes the team better. trading him makes the team worse. While it will suck to lose him for nothing, that's what good teams have to do in order for a shot at the SC. Look at the Hawks 2010 championship team, they had a lot of players ready to test free agency, but they didn't trade them because they knew they all had value to the team and gave them the best chance to win - drummer829
Then I'd have to ask, given my points on needing more forward and scoring depth, how could you possibly create a package to fish for a top 6 winger who is not a rental. Again I'm going on the premise of not necessarily going for the big name or long shot trades.
We all know this teams problems with injuries and sure our bottom six is much improved and could help with secondary scoring but could this team go all the way with a fully healthy top 6, Bb included, let alone two down and or somebody hiding injuries?
Regardless of anyone's answers we need to give Harrington more opportunities to show us and management a better way to gauge our options. |

The idea of a Comeau-Goc-Spaling 4th line in the playoffs is very intriguing. - cap1681
for sure.

There's another point you just made the think of:
If Martin is traded, Scuderi's role and ice time expand. - jmatchett383
And if it is done at the deadline, that only gives the kids 2 months of playing time in a top 4 role of 20+ mins per night. Honestly, I'm really not comfortable having a prospect take top 4 minutes during the toughest games of the year. Keep Martin, use a draft pick and/or prospect to grab a decent top 6 rental option. |

If they are going to trade Martin for a top 6 rental, it should be done early in the season. Give the kids time to make mistakes and learn from them. |

Really good points for both sides. Its gonna be a wait and see situation. Part one starts this week when Harrington gets on the ice. I have yet to see him play so Im looking forward to it. |

All this talk could be moot if Martin goes down with an injury like he has the last 2 seasons. |

Ive had 2 off base thoughts in the back of my head supporting the idea of trading Martin. First was the fact that he's become injury prone over the past 2 seasons. Second is the fact that the Penguins haven't had any success in the playoffs since Martin signed on to the team. Now, the 2nd part is merely a coincidence, but it's in the back of my head. |

I hope if JR has a trade in mind he pulls the trigger in January and doesn't wait until the deadline. I get the whole "trade value goes up" concept but this franchise has consistently tried to make a deadline splash every year and it just never seems to work. - Danny_Devito
X2, I don't like last minute acquisitions. It takes too long for the new player to adjust, plus all the other players that get mixed around. I loved the Hossa trade, but wished it came 2 months earlier. Hasn't worked out for the Pens in a while, def didn't work for the Blues last year. |

Okay.
Who do you think realistically would be given less time so that Harrington can play more minutes? |

A solution for our trade scenarios and Harrington having more playing time without Scuderi playing over Despres - throw Scuds into the trade package and market it as the once in a lifetime, stock your defense deal. |

Honestly, if they included Scuderi in a deal, I'd view it as good asset management. |

i feel like it would lower the return for martin.
id rather give someone scuderi and a fourth for their sixth and call it a day. |

Finally saw the Bennett injury on the pens website with their "A Peek Inside" video... looked pretty bad. Hope he's healing well. |

So let me ask a question:
If Martin stays on the team, and is a valuable piece of the Penguins winning a Cup this season, is it worth him leaving at the end of the season? - jmatchett383
yes. big IF though |
