Some how I don't think it was just them that made their teams win the cup. They also had better coaching, better depth and arguably better goaltending. Theoretically when the leafs are competing for a cup Reilly will be the number 1 d man and Phaneuf the number 2.

IMO, you cannot win with Dion as your #1 dman. As simple as that.
Look at teams who won the cup recently

LA - Doughty
CHI - Keith
BOS - Chara

yes they all have a better dcore than TOR, but they also have a much better #1 dman.

Depends where the cap situation goes. Also, all the talk is #1 D, #1 D, #1 D. All of those winning teams have excellent #1 D men but the depth isn't exactly chopped liver. Those teams had reliable bottom 4 D to round out the D corps.

All depends what year it is and what the salary cap is at. Habs are paying Subban 9 million right now and they are going to have to give out raises at some point too.

Yes but these guys deliver. Can we say the same about Dion? That's my point. In a cap world, you cannot have 7M doing nothing (or not much). You need your $ to be effective, like Kessel.
