This is my opinion. equipment; gloves, helmet, pads, skates, they don't matter. but to me a good stick does. the feel is so different from stick to stick.

I agree that you don't need top of the line for skates. For sticks either, as long as the feel is there. I just don't feel like getting used to composite sticks.
