Agreed, that's why they should have kept Lu or released him through a buyout.

The canucks have the same owner when they traded Lu as when they signed him to that ridiculous contract. This organization made a commitment to him to be the franchise's goaltender. They should have lived up to that commitment.

When he asked to be traded that created a toxic environment for the team. They had little choice but to trade or buy out(only to Florida). And I mean the first time he asked not after the heritage classic. What were the options really.... hold on to a cancer or move him for nothing as most people didn't even think he was tradable. The assets we got back were considered untouchable for Lu only a year previous.......

Edit.... for the record I would have preferred a buyout.... but asking anyone to eat that contract along with Gillis and Torts.... that is over 50 million... that is a lot to ask of any owner.

But was he the cause of the toxic environment or was the toxicity created by poor management?

Lots of examples of our stars/heroes leaving on poor terms. I'm starting to think it can't always be the player's fault.

Blum and Elliott... Would prefer them to Weber as 7th d man.

Lots can be heaped at Gillis's feet but when he signed Luongo to that contract it was within the rules of the CBA. He cannot be blamed that Bettman decided to punish teams retroactively with the "Luongo Rule". Many here were also pumped to have an elite goalie signed to a low cap.
Not necessarily you but people have a very short memory when it comes to the brutal goal-tending the Canucks have had over the years, it has been only recently that we have been spoiled enough to have goal-tending controversies.

- belcherbd

It's not the Luongo rule, if anything it's the Hossa & Zetterberg rule, they signed their twelve year deals before Luongo did.

I was shocked to see Blum's name on there. I haven't followed his career but I remember him as a Giant. Captain right?

He's always been under contract with a team (Nashville, Minny) so no I don't think so. Maybe...

I agree but most people refer to it as the Luongo rule, most likely because of Dreger if I had to guess.

Elliott would be a great pickup for the farm but Weber is definitely a better option at this point with the big club.

He was the captain during his last season with the Giants - and was also captain of the USA's WJC team that year as well. It was a pretty remarkable season, actually... 16G, 50A and a +53 in only 51GP. In hindsight, a good number of those points might have been attributable to Evander Kane's breakout year, but even so he's had several productive AHL seasons as well.

Unfortunately, every single time I've seen him play in the NHL he's just looked overwhelmed... sounds like nothing much has changed.

Elliott I'd definitely claim, would easily take him over Weber. Blum as well, but prefer Elliott.

Disagree. Weber is what he is, a #7/#8 depth guy that can fill in at times as a low minute d-man. I think Elliot/Blum both have the upside to be a decent full-time #5/#6 d-man and can already fill the depth role that Weber currently does.

I guess with Sbisa a question mark and Garrison gone I prefer a bit more stability in that spot than another young guy. I also think the PP is in dire need of Weber's shot.

You would think that being overwhelmed was a result of inexperience. Blum's played a poop load of hockey from junior to the NHL. Repetitive behaviour must have some effect.

Both of those guys have pretty good offensive upside and decent shots as well, but I get what you're saying. I'd just prefer the upside since both of those guys have shown promise and Weber is what he is at this point and could likely be sent down unclaimed anyway. I know them getting waived is a red flag, but it wouldn't be the first time a solid player was waived.

I don't think anyone is expecting to pick up a #1C on the waiver wire but it would be nice to have some young, skilled depth for a change.
