i'm negative because i don't automatically expect them to contend for a Stanley Cup berth? yikes... i expect them to make the playoffs in a top-3 slot. that's where my expectations end at this point of the preseason. i don't expect them to battle for the #1 seed in the playoffs. i think it's a possibility, but an expectation?
- DoubleDown

Expectation that they clinch one of the top 3 spots in the division is reasonably high, but I didn't say the expectation is that they go to the Cup.

Do you not believe they have a chance to win their division?
Do you not believe they have a chance to finish first in the East?

I'm not saying that it's the most likely scenario they do both. They have very tough competition in Boston and Tampa, but do you not see them right up there with those two teams?

I'm asking... I want to know what everyone thinks on this.

Gallant will win but the gap is closing.

Imagine if his name was Louis Allaire
- stinger67

Then you'd want to make him captain.

i understand that point, but if he's useless at centre, which was the case most of last year, doesn't that hurt the club even more?
- DoubleDown

if that proves to be a case, they've made a massive mistake signing him in the first place. he went through a 20-game stretch that was brutal. was he useless for most of last year? Not at all. He was very up and very down, unfortunately. He showed incredible potential at times, and incredible fragility at others.

Time to see what he can do with an established role, better linemates--as he's guaranteed to have. That's all I'm saying. He's not stopping Galchenyuk from anything. A strong showing in preseason for Galchenyuk is only going to apply more pressure on Eller to find that consistency right from the start.

Point in the blog was to suggest this is a healthy thing for them and the team. There was no statement in there saying Eller should stand in Galchenyuk's way.

He's useless at the wing. He's not comfortable there, and it's painfully obvious--though I can admit, that doesn't exactly check a box in the positive column for him.

Eller's under the gun. It's very clear. Galchenyuk might push him out, but I don't see that happening before he's even given the chance to show he can be a consistent threat and perform his role well. We'll see what shakes out...

- EricEngels

Maybe he has no clue what wingers are supposed to do on the ice...and maybe that's why he never sees his linemates...he doesn't know where to look for them!!!

Yes, I'm exaggerating... but there's a bit of truth to it.

They will fight with the Leafs, Sens, Detroit, Philty, Columbus, Caps for one of the 5 spots left.

Boston, Pitts and Tampa will be ahead of MTL IMO.

He's been the same Lars Eller, every year, since he got in Montreal.
Last year was no different and next season won't be any different either.

Not sure why he got such a nice pay day.

YES. The answer is yes.

The answer should always be YES...

Kidding aside, very good team, well balanced, with young kids knocking at the door. Still missing a bit of size and grit on the blue, maybe a scorer or two (coud Bourque finally answer the phone?) but all in all very good. to MB and the coaching staff.

i honestly don't know, because i don't know how the defence will shake out. will Emelin be more effective? will Gilbert be a good fit and help drive possession up? will 1 or 2 of those kids step in and finally assert themselves as an NHL presence? i thought defence was a problem last year. specifically a lack of mobility. i think that needs to improve for Montreal to truly be one of the top teams in the East.
