34. Best shape of my life... - Hockey_Reverend
34/35 was also the years where I was in the best shape of my life. It wasn't even close to any other time frame.
I can tell you, at 50, it is VERY tough to stay in shape. Karate class is kicking my ass in terms of coordination, flexibility and especially cardio.
I was just talking to a friend today about this. We are both in much better shape than average for 50 year olds but there is no way in hell that "age is just a number" the deterioration is real

What the stats allow for is a hard look at where players are, and to see who is playing above, or below, their average. Along with death and taxes, regression to the mean is a near certainty, and the stats can give insight into whether something is sustainable or not. I don't doubt that some of them are misused, and looking just at Corsi will tell you nothing; an in depth look at ALL of the information available to you however can be extremely useful - lumlums
I have not yet seen stats that showed this to be the case.
If we had good stats on how well people covered their man, or good puck vs. player position algorithms based on actual sensor data, then I might believe it.
I would also like to see things like # of times a player fails to clear the zone when he has clear, unambiguous possession or how often a point man shoots the puck into the covering winger's shin pads or pinches and fails to gain possession or keep the puck in.
THAT is the kind of advanced stats we need.
Even then, I suspect that there is a very large team component to all of these stats that has a lot to do with coaching and intangibles. |

Edmonton is #115... Second worst in hockey.
I don't think they are far off
Edit: NYI are 116! - robin_steele264
some fans are taking this way too seriously. if your team has been terrible on ice the last 2-3 years and you have expensive tickets, you're going to be low on this list! that describes Canadian hockey teams. |

You are free to interpret that anyway.
For the most part my 'adult fun' involves family time with lady, her daughter and a 6 month old lab. I just transport everyone around and pay for everything and take the dog out to crap.

I'm 54 and still in pretty good shape for an geezer. The deterioration is definitely real. The body breaks down and the pain is constant. It gets harder to stay in shape but you have to keep plugging away. |

all of that? it's non quantifiable because it's subjective. and i can guarantee you that even if someone did gather that data, all we would hear is whining about unreliable the data was if it showed our players in a negative light. the stats we have are great and they're useful. but you seem to be looking at a system that eradicates the human element of scouting and managing.

We're the same age.
My pain has disappeared, thanks to not trying to kill myself playing sports with my buds.
I do find I am a lot weaker than I was which pisses me off. Gotta work on that. But I'm still at my senior hockey playing weight - just not as strong. |

This is the type of thing that is actually being worked on as part of the "all three zones" project by Corey Sznajder (aka the shutdown line). I don't argue that the stats are not where they need to be, but the more people buy in, the more time, care and attention can be put into making them work better for everybody
