How did the game in the rookie tournament go last night? I think it was Ottawa vs. Chicago. |

He realized the Hawks, Kings, Rangers, Habs were loaded with TOUGH ENFORCERS!
George Parros was key in the habs success last season. Nonis took notes. |

Orr didn't do (frank)all last year. He's pointless if other teams are going to avoid fighting him. It makes no sense to waste a roster spot on Orr if he's not going to be effective in his role. - burn
if the do decide to keep a "deterent" on the roster, I would prefer McLaren, who's skating is noticeable better and who can actually effectively forecheck.
What everyone seems to be forgetting is during the shortened season when the fought a ton, there was also Mark Fraser playing regular minutes on defense. It wasn't just Orr and/or McLaren fighting.. it was guys like Fraser hitting and when necessary scraping that set the tone.
I believe the lack of toughness on back end was part of the reason for moving Gunnarson - who was anything but robust. While I wasn't thrilled with the return on the specific deal (nothing against Polak) its pretty clear that adding Polak and to a degree Robidas goes some distance to stiffening the spines on the back end.
I was surprised that the Leafs didn't give Fraser a pro-tryout for the upcoming camp. I think they kind of owed it to him for the puck in the forehead and for his performance as a whole that season.

It was also half a season. The Leafs have been great for half a season for the past 10 years...usually it was the later half when the playoffs were out of reach. |

Yeah we have that porter weisse over here right now too. It was worth the try but I'd rather just have an Aventinus. |

Their PK has been brutal since the 05 lockout. The only time it wasn't in the bottom 5 of the league they made the play-offs. I think most of the additions this off-season were to address this (polak, komarov, winnik ect.) If they get their pk into the top 10 I think it is very possible they make the play-offs. Unless Bernier gets injuried or has a horrible year - LeafsBlueline
THIS THIS THIS!!!!
I have been saying this to my buddys for like 3 years. The area they need to address is the PK. They suck. PP is great, 5 on 5 is fine. They are losing many games on the PK. This needs to be addressed and I sure hope the new guys can turn it around...

I'm inclined to agree that this team should have more bite. I think the additions of Winnik and Polak, plus the return of Komarov will help keep the team focused. But that won't matter much if they play defence like they did last season. I think this team has the talent to be better than a bubble team in the East, but again, all for not if they don't learn from their mistakes. |
