Is the stern rap a flick of the wrist or a wind up motion? Not that it matters, that is a pretty soft object.

I don't own a dog, and never will for the mere fact that I'm allergic to them, but if hitting your dog as utterly unacceptable, then why aren't shock collars/invisible fences? They have the same effect: short, stern moment of discomfort, but gets the message across.

I would never use them and strongly oppose them. Better ways to train.

I have a 7 month old, and while at that age it's still a work in progress, I find a loud booming "insert your dog's name here" stops him in his tracks.

I hate hitting animals, because most of the time they don't know why they're getting beat, but if your dog's not listening...

Three rules I have tried to live by

1) Don't tell people how to raise their children

2 ) Don't tell people how to treat their pets.

3 ) Don't tell friends or acquaintances , their boyfriend/ girlfriend , Husband /Wife suck . Even if they do .

They will not listen to the message and they will hate the messenger.

It also doesn't matter if that's how he, you or I were disciplined as children. The world evolves, it's not acceptable today. Plain and simple

We might be the only generation/society in history that has tried this hard to greatly minimize if not completely eliminate any and all kinds of negative reinforcement. I'm not sure it's proven effective, or even to produce better results when it works. Kids say and do things now that a lot of people I grew up with didn't even dream of saying or doing, and I grew up at the very beginning of the so-called "entitlement generation".

If I'm Buffalo, my only real concern in this is Joel Armia.

The guy has a ton of talent. He's a stud. But also puts in infuriatingly mediocre efforts at times. Hopefull the AHL grinds that out of him.

- BINGO!

He's the Thomas Vanek of hockey... Wait.

Pointless. You teach your dog to fear you, not stop the behavior.

Grabbing the scruff of the neck and yelling at them usually works when they are young. If that fails a rolled a news paper and a tap on the butt is the best option IMO.

If you get the poop kicked out of you by your parents as a kid.. you are prone do grow up and do the same to your kids..

Even though i dont agree with that at all.. that's the way some people are raised.

I've had my share of lumps as a kid . Yeah I deserved it. A lot of kids don't understand or comprehend that if you do something wrong on purpose, there can be consequences . Accidents can and will happen but still need to be addressed.

Years ago, the first thought a kid had before he did something wrong was.. " I get caught and pops is gonna kick my ass" How many kids these days have ever thought that ?

Honestly, I think it all depends on the kid. Some kids couldn't care less that they're gonna get a smack or two when they get home after doing something wrong. The discipline needs to be tailored to the child.

I'm not saying that I would ever hit a kid if I had one. But I've smacked my dog once or twice and then felt terrible about it right after. I get the feeling a 3 or 4 year old isn't going to understand why they're being hit just like a dog doesn't.

But I'm not a parent, so I could be completely off base.

Some sports writers just need help....

Buffalo Bills Power Ranking: 18

Yet the 2 teams they beat are higher, two 0-2 teams (Indy and New Orleans), Arizona and the Patriots....

Shouldn't such rankings be based on results? Apparently New England was ranked 4 last week after losing and the team that had beaten them was ranked 14

None of them like admitting when they are wrong.

If we win this week, there just be legitimate talk of us being a top 5 team IMO
