when I mouthed off to my mother or father, the ol' man took out the belt...when my father wasn't around, my mom grabbed the nearest kitchen utensil...when I misbehaved, same thing...

and when I misbehaved at school, the nuns took out "the spanking machine," a stack of taped rulers, or the pointer...and it hurt...and it left welts on my ass, legs and hands

There's a difference between beating your kid and a swat on the ass though. He beat his kid. It isn't right and hopefully he learns from it. Based on the past history, probably not though.

This is not a subject I like to debate. I understand both sides and fall in the middle. The big problem with me is if there is a "beating" it needs to be more than just that. It has to be a teachable moment where you explain the reasoning for it and keep control of yourself during the act. You can't expect a change in a person if you yell at them what they did wrong and beat them wildly. Staying calm explain your disappointment. And for Effs same they are your kid not your best friend it is alright to get mad at them.

DON CHERRY, Canadian Hockey Commentator for CBC Television, was asked on a local live radio talk show what he thought about the allegations of torture of suspected terrorists. His reply prompted his ejection from the studio, but to thunderous applause from the audience.

HIS STATEMENT:

"If hooking up the rag-head terrorist's testicles to a car battery to get the truth out of the lying little camel shagger will save just one Canadian life or one American life, then I have only three things to say:
'Red is positive, black is negative, and make sure his nuts are wet."

I, like many other kids who got a whoppin', had welts...couldn't see them when they were on my butt...could feel them, though...

that being said, there's a difference

Looking back there were times I wish I got a belt to the ass for some of the things I said or did. Most I ever got was smacked up side the head.

Mine are 17 and 14. I have spanked both, but neither would remember and it has happened less than 10 times as a father.

I got hit with belts and spoons. I got pepper in my mouth when I sassed, and soap when I swore. There are other more effective ways to discipline.

I would be VERY proud to introduce my two to anyone one on this site, or anyone anywhere. They're not spoiled (in character) but they're probably "spoiled" (in possessions) cause I like to reward them when they do great things.

I always had to earn things. Got my drivers license before my sister that's 2 years older than me because Mom said if you couldn't remember to do your homework, you couldn't be trusted to drive. Also got my 1st car as a graduation present, but I graduated in the top 25 of my class.

I have read Peterson's statement at CNN.com . His son apparently pushed another child off a video motorcycle game and the other child got injured . His statements seemed sincere and it seems he felt it was a teaching moment . Most folks go with what they know . Peterson had been raised with a switch used for discipline and that was he went to . Did he inflict a little too much punishment? Maybe . But at least he was trying to parent and not letting his child run wild with no sense of right or wrong . And let him have a sense of entitlement a lot of the youth seem to have.

No I do not endorse child abuse as some so stupidly suggested . But I also feel you can't take away a man's career for this action.

The most vivid memory for me was being disciplined by my 5 foot little jewish fireplug of a mother . It happened when I was 17 . I was feeling pretty full of myself at the time . I had already been on quite a few Division 1 football recruiting trips at the time . When everyone keeps telling you at the age how great you are it goes to your head .
I was in the kitchen with my mom and was already about 5 foot 11 and as I said my mom was 5 foot . My mother said something to me and I sassed her back and said what are you going to do about it . She told me to come over to her , I did . She proceeded to pull up a stool , get up on it and drop me like I bad habit . I had that coming !

Till the day I lost her I never spoke back to her again . And I quickly had my ego shrunk back to size.

"Going with what you know" is an awful excuse. He hit 4 year olds.

I'm not convinced he should go to jail, but he should be disciplined. He is obviously a clueless parent

You did read he injured another child with his actions ? Peterson hit with a switch which is what he was hit with . I have read a lot articles on line today about it as I am in a slow period before my company does our production run of our newly approved product . One story I read was by a person that had been disciplined with a switch . And also disciplined with a switch ( claims all he children turned out to be fine members of the human race).

He claimed with this type of punishment the marks do not come out right away . I encourage you to read Peterson's statement he gave to CNN . It was sincere and did not seem to come from a child abuser .

I feel the press nowadays always tries to dig for more dirt even when it is not there . Some of the statements attributed to the boy seem coached. There are so many 24 hour news channels and sports channels looking for content . News has now become entertainment . I am just not sure how much truth is sought , but rather ratings . I will wait for all the facts to come out before I rush to any judgement and condemn a man and stop him from pursuing his living.
Would have our heroes from the past, have still been our heroes if subjected to all the media coverage curent high profile people are?

Ray Rice sounded sincere too.

Sending your 4 year old to the doctors is wrong. He should be punished. You don't hit children let alone hit them with an object. I honestly don't care what the circumstances are. He admitted doing it, that's all I needed to hear.

Now, I don't think AP is a scum like Rice, but being clueless doesn't let him off the hook. He should be punished

This is it right here. Perfectly said.

This is my last comment on the issue...if people are so opposed to Ray Rice and striking a woman, but OK with whipping a child with a switch, would it be OK if that child was a girl?

Edit: Maybe Ray Rice was just trying to "discipline" he fiancé.
