What those guys are good at is compiling the raw data into usable information. And how to best use that information in conjunction with others. That is what they are advising teams on and why they were hired. And also probably in hopes that the same people who developed these statisticas, can develop other methods of statistical analysis in the future, that the team they work for, now only has access to. The issue was never the science behind it. The issue from my point of view, which has been shown to be true, based on infomation and statements made by teams in general, is the data collected. Websites just don't have the resources to break down the game or data that a team has. And I think we'll see in the future, that as access to better data collection becomes available. The statistics that the fans have access to, will become better, more accurate, and more useful.

It's not just about compiling raw data. It was more about determining which stats are repeatable and most correlate to winning hockey games.

That's the expertise most of these guys bring to the table, and definitely the most sought after asset.

And yes, technology will eventually be in place to help take the human element out of data collection. But you make it sound like if you're not employed by an NHL team, your data is inferior.

How about this? Carchidi keeps bringing up Powe's name as the 4th line center for this season.

As far as what those guys bring to an NHL team, I agree, it's not about the data at all. Which is why I repeatedly stated that the science of analytics is not the issue. The science is very sound.

And there is no doubt that the data that public websites have available to them compared to what NHL teams have access to, is absolutely inferior. Just from a logisitics stand point alone.

The speculation that the Isles should get better because the kids are a year older, as well as addition by subtraction of Andrew MacDonald?

I think simply that MacDonald is better than the analytics say he is. Maybe its a rarity, maybe it isn't. Maybe he lets teams access the zone too easily. But I also know that he seems pretty calm with the puck in his own zone and makes a pretty good first pass.

Maybe if he challenged more he wouldn't be in the position to have to defend so often and THAT is what it is. But the bottom line is that when he does defend, my eyes tell me he does a pretty good job.

Any negative connotations pertaining to AMac's defense, size, positioning, and/or contract are all completely unfounded.

It's not that he's without good traits: he's very mobile, makes solid passes and plays tight man coverage.

That he allows opponents to gain entry into the Flyers zone with the puck so easily far outweighs those positives.

And I think that shows up well in the analytics and eye test arguments.

He didn't want to play for his junior team or the NHL team that drafted him. He's obviously a crybaby, and he'll be run out of the league within 2 years without ever amounting to anything at all.

Sounds like something that can be fairly easily correctable with better coaching and a better understanding of the Flyers' system.
