Bergeron would have no cup ring if it wasn't for Thomas having one of, if not the best season for a goalie in NHL history.

I honestly think defensive play is now being overrated. Offensive talent is far more important. You can teach defense. You can't teach skill.

While LA played solid all year, they had to fight for the playoffs because they had a terrible offense. The reason they won the cup was increased scoring. The defense only mentality wasn't doing it for them in the regular season.

And what skill does Edmonton have exactly? They don't have much.

Hall, RNH, Eberle, Yakupov , and Schultz are highly skilled offensive players. They have plenty of warts (youth, inexperience, size to a lesser degree) but lack of skill isn't one of them.

To a lesser extent Perron, Purcell and Pouliot all have good to very good skills.

The Oilers lack plenty of things, and most of them revolve around defensive acumen. But if you want to say it's pure skill that they lack, you probably can't be convinced otherwise.

Until a special group of highly skilled forwards punch through again. It's tough to have enough talent in this 30 team league to do it though, but it will happen again.
