Grossmann and Coburn are already a proven shutdown pair. Coburn has looked solid next to Timonen, Hatcher or Grossmann because they know their role and do their part. Coburn next Bruno Gervais was a disasters. Michael Del Zotto to me is a third pair tryout guy. He has the deal but his recent play doesn't guarantee him much. I have Del Zotto and Schenn chocked on the third pair so their minutes can be managed properly against certain match ups. I have a little more faith in Coburn, Grossmann, MacDonald and Streit against tougher match ups.

Grossmann/Coburn can probably play some of the better lines in the league to a stalemate for stretches... but not sure they're actually capable of shutting down/containing top-lines over the long haul.

Maybe AMac/Coburn could fare a bit better? That pair didn't look too hot vs the Rangers, though, in the few times they were put together.

I agree that MDZ/Schenn has a very very high probability of ending up being a thing.

On splitting Jake and G:

My premise to do that was because there were a handful of games in the recent lock out shortened season where Jake played wing to BSchenn at center. They were a very dangerous and productive line in the short stretch they were together. It benefits Brayden tremendously having Jake control the puck and set up plays.

I think putting Voracek on Lacavalier's wing might help Vinnie but likely it will drag down the play of Voracek, if VL can't keep up with the play.

I would hate to sacrifice their best line, G + Jake, to make 2 weaker lines.

While I see the benefit to splitting G and Jake, I'm not sure Berube will do it.

A pretty low volume of information for a three part interview.

the thing about that pair is I think they would tend to kill the offense

but on the defensive side they would be fine

LOL, pretty much the standard softball GM interview

Do you like your team as is?
Answer: Absolutely, we have a great bunch of guys

What he'd like to say: Well, it's what I got to work with since no one wants to trade a dman without us giving up a million or so assets

Do you see any of your prospects winning a spot?
Answer: They would really have to clearly beat out one of our vets in preseason to do so.

What he'd like to say: Man, I hope so. Be nice to have some mobile youth on our blue line for once!

Talk a bit about the Hartnell/Umberger swap
Response: We think that Scotty is a great guy, but we really like RJ's versatility

What he'd like to say: At least R.J. won't come into camp 10 lbs overweight, fall for no reason or take a bunch of stupid penalties, and his crappy contract has only 3 years left, not 5! Hopefully the rest of our guys take a hint from this and get their butts in shape!

interviews with any athlete/coach/front office guy are generally a complete waste of time.

Yeah, every once in a while you get a guy like Pronger or a Buddy Ryan who are a blast to listen to, but more often its just the same vanilla b.s.

It might take a while to get their report.

The blood tests for things like protein C and S deficiency, the anti-phospholipid syndrome that Bill mentioned in an earlier blog, usually are only done at special labs. For the majority of hospitals these are called "send out" tests and can take a week or two to get the results.

The other thing I heard when I asked a friend of mine who specializes in these things is that some of the doctors prefer to wait until the acute episode of blood clot (leg vein thrombus or pulmonary embolus/clot) is treated and stabilized for a number of months before checking for the disorders like protein C deficiency. Some docs think that the acute episode of clot interferes with the test results for the clotting disorder and can lead to false results. Basically the premise is that levels of protein C are reduced during the clotting episode and can lead to a false test result.

Sorry if that is confusing. It is a complicated area of medicine.

(frank) blood thinners put him on 81 mg aspirin so he can play

I'm glad the outlook for Kimmo is bright though. Hockey is one thing, life is another.

The Flyers are going to have play better defense as a team overall, even if they had Timonen. The loss of Timonen makes it even more important. None of the Flyers defense pairs are going to do it alone.

for some reason the aspirin works better preventing clots on the arterial side
like the coronary arteries.
doesn't seem to work as well for venous clots.

I'm glad Kimmo is all right too, that is the main thing.

How important is it that we see Morin play a full season in juniors? Do you guys want him to go back right after camp or see through nine games in the NHL?
- SuperSchennBros

Wouldn't mind a 9 game stint but is it worth it to burn a year off his ELC?

If he goes back before the10th game played, it won't burn a year off his ELC. But I don't know if the Flyers will have the Cap space to do that.
