Internet rumors swirled yesterday that the Flyers have extended training camp invitations to veteran unrestricted free agent wingers Dustin Penner and Ryan Malone.

Habs Eye on the Prize’s Andrew Berkshire does a fantastic job of succinctly describing the dichotomy that is Therrien as Canadiens head coach 2.0:

Is winning or speaking French more important to connecting with your fanbase? Absolutely it is possible to get both (so many successful MTL coaches in the past). Michel Therrien may indeed win or go deep next year. It is also possible to have neither. Management needs to make the call of who they think will perform the best (wins and losses) for their team. In the case of Therrien, it is debatable what management thought after the Cunneyworth fiasco.
Montreal could hire an english-only speaking coach and a translator to stand next to him during media scrums. Is that such a disconnect for French-speaking fans? Americans Ron Wilson and John Tortorella coached Canadian teams (TOR and VAN). Did that fanbase feel disconnected from the team because an American was the coach?
The fans need to judge a coach based on the job he does (wins and losses) instead of his cultural identity.
He really understands the issue.
EDIT: Canadians were confused by Tortorella's and Wilson's American dialect. |

He's doing it on purpose, right? Or he's really that stupid?

this is obviously a thorny issue for those that live in quebec so i'm not trolling. but look at top flight pro soccer in say, England. this is a country that has a pretty conservative, nationalistic side to it in the lower and middle classes. the people that basically that like to beat the poop out of each other for wearing the wrong jersey at the wrong bar.
several of the coaches over there are italian, spanish and argentine. but the people don't care about that or if they need a translator. if they win is all they care about.
what is so different in quebec? honest question. |

To me it really doesn't matter.
And anyway, it'S not like it's really hard to find a qualified coach that speaks french... Julien is good enough to coach Boston, Vigneault is good enough for the Rangers and Therrien went to the cup finale with the Pens and a conference finale with the habs...
My problem is how the idiot compared having an American coach (who speaks english) vs a Canadian coach (who speaks english). It's completely stupid.
