Boroweicki deal is solid. Possible grp. 6 UFA next summer. Term and low money. Worst case he's a 6/7 and plays some wing. Great team skills!

I just can't see Gryba having any big value unless you're the Montreal Canadiens and saw his hit turn that series around. I like him but I;m sure you can grab a Gryba off of waivers from a team somewhere in pre-season

I think that hit set the tone for the entire series, Ottawa dismantled Montreal physically - maybe I should of said made the statement of the series

Sabres did this exact thing with Mike Weber and it made me want to puke. Guys that barely can play the 6-7 role should never get multiyear extensions

At 1.1 mil he is a depth guy thats give 110% out on the ice ,he is limited but for that price i dont see an issue tbh .We will have to make a move soon we have just too many blueliners on one way deals atm

What's with the negativity guys, this isn't a bad deal. I have no problem seeing him play top-6 minutes. He's a team first kind of guy who can fight and provides a physical side to the game. This deal also pretty much guarantees that another trade is coming up.

That's the problem. Without any knowledge of any other deal coming in, this looks awful. If, on the other hand, some team is willing to take one of our defensemen not named Erik, then we start to see the logic.

Otherwise, we have a team full of bottom pairing defensemen and this just adds to the logjam (especially, when you consider that Freddy Claessen is playing quite well).

At least wait for THIS season's performance stats to come in before we judge the results of this contract. We're prejudging him based on previous season performances when in reality each year brings new results and new revelations about a player's ability and maturity. Negative nelly's to the max degree here today.

This is not really a bad deal (less money than on Gryba who we have basically come to a consensus on being an NHL regular. And even if you don't think that, the team definitely does if we read into Dorion's comments on him, so suck it up and deal, or switch allegiances). The level of hyperbole here today is both sad and ridiculous ("I can no longer support this team because they signed a depth defenceman to a 3 year deal who I've never seen play in more than 5 games and who will only be our #7 injury replacement this year. IM DONE!) Here are some other potential reasons for the extension:

1. A trade where a D man or two is moved out for a quality forward who we will be enamoured with.

2. The team Ottawa is trading with wants Boro but wanted salary and cost certainty on him as an upcoming UFA.

3. A trade where Ottawa gives up more salary than they take back and need to reach the cap floor again with Boro's contract.

4. The team believes he can become an Andrew Ference type mainstay on our defence in future years. It is not a defenceman's job to put up points, but to prevent goals and clear the zone.

I think we are a bit to hard on the D-core. Methot is a serviceable top-4 who can potentially play along Karlsson if need be (although it would be better to bring in a legit top-2). Management expects Weir and Cowen to step up and play like actual top-4 defensemen. Phillips/Gryba/Ceci/Boro/Claessen all can potentially play top-6 roles on this team. I could definitely see one of them traded along a Greening, Condra, or Neil before training camp.

It is not hard to find stay at home defensemen, let alone extremely average ones that don't appear to have the chops for the NHL. Yet, we have resigned 3 within the last year in Gryba, Phillips, and Boro. Unless a deal is made, this is a very poor signing that did not need to be made just yet.

This would seem to strongly support the belief that there's some kind of a trade in the works... though if you don't have the trade in place, you wouldn't typically start with the unnecessary contract extension. Or perhaps that this could be an insurance policy of sorts against another team claiming Borowiecki off of waivers if they send him down again after training camp... though it begs the question of why you'd commit to a player you're actively trying not to play. For lack of any semblance of a rational explanation, I'll just assume that Borowiecki stopped by Bryan Murray's house to discuss a new extension after leaving those butcher knives outside of Justin Trudeau's place.

One way or another, Methot, Cowen, Phillips, Gryba, and Borowiecki are probably better suited to be an offensive line in the CFL... that's just way too much of the same kind of player taking up way too large a proportion of the team's defence, none of whom I'm even remotely interested in seeing try to do anything with the puck outside of their own zone. If you want a really scary thought, just imagine what happens if Karlsson gets hurt.

Guys, it's 1.1M. Who cares.

I know as Sens fans we are used to counting every penny because we know our owner is a cheap ass.

That said, I don't think his contract is going to affect whether we resign Ryan, MacArthur, Methot or Anderson.

At the end of the day, this is typical summer news. During the season, no one would care. The guy got some money. Good for him.

Great signing, tough as nails d-man and a good leader. Sounds like a sign and trade though...
