The cap set at the beginning of the year is just an estimate of what the split will be. Somehow they estimate a low/mid/high number each year, and, in negotiations between the league and the PA, the cap is set somewhere in that range for the year. Part of the pay to the players is held back into an escrow fund - which the owners kick into also - awaiting final end of year results.

There is a "true-up" after each season, with the players either giving back money out of the escrow, or the league kicking in more money, based on actual financial (HRR) results.

The higher the original cap estimate, the higher the escrow % the players have held back.

It is to the advantage of players with signed contracts to have a lower cap: the bulk of the burden then falls on the unsigned players, who have less available for their contracts, thus lowering the overall pay-out to the players, and reducing the amount given back if revenues fall short.

I'm not sure what happens if there is extra revenue - does that go to players above their contracted salaries?

Not sure I wrote all of that clearly enough - and if I've written something incorrect, I'm sure (and would welcome) a correction will be provided.

He might be looking at some KHL teams - he said from what he heard, he likes the lifestyle in those small Russian towns, especially in winter.

It's good to be the free agent.

KHayes would be competing for a roster spot against his brother in orida. Moreover, this Trochet (,whatever his name,,a rookie on Florida.last year)probably beats both brothers for a roster spot.

The only really sensible place for him is Calgary. If he plays like a big forward.and not as.much the way his brother does, then he could have earned a look with Chicago. But Chicago really could use one big center, and K Hayes is a wing not centerice position .

You or I were in his skates we probably go same.route he is taking. Yet it would really be something if an all.collegiate line graduated and each played on the same line in their opening night debut. Now I would.bet that has never happened. You might spend more than three days researching that, St Louis Braves fan!

Thanks that was helpful.

I can see why the NHLPA would want the cap to be as close to actual revnues so they don't have to give anything back, but your comment about a revenue overage is interesting. Anyone know the answer?

Also, it seems like the extra million the owners wanted to include which is less than a 1.5% increase in the cap and thus a small risk for players with contracts to take for the benfit of their brothers in arms.

Don't forget - that's about $90,000 to guys like Toews, Kane, Sharp this year - about $120,000 to a Crosby or Malkin (don't know what their salaries are).

More than a game's pay.

I was looking at the Icehogs roster list this morning and noted that Alex Broadhurst (who has always intrigued me) is listed at just over 190 lbs. Is this correct because I remember him being drafted as a very small player? He must have developed a lot by age 21.

He had very good first year as a pro and a strong last year as a junior.

Not much has been said about him even though he lead the Icehogs in scoring last year. Could he be this year's under the radar player?

I'd believe that Broadhurst is closer to 170 lbs.

The nice thing is that he plays bigger than he is. He's willing to get into the traffic areas and take a beating. He's got some raw talent that needs to be refined.

Let's see what he does this season before talking about if he really fits with the big club.

Maybe he can return Kane's game winning puck from 2010 now.

Look for Michael Leighton to provide goaltending depth in Rockford of the AHL. Antti Raanta still expected to remain #Blackhawks' backup.

Michael Leighton, eh? Didn't even know he still played hockey.

Let's hope he never gets his second chance to wear the Indianhead.
