I think it's fortunate things turned out the way they did. The arbitration process does not help the team nor the player in the long run. In this instance, however, all of the proceedings had already taken place and they were just awaiting the arbitrator's ruling. So that means all the negatives with respect to each party were discussed at length. I'm surprised that it was allowed to go to arbitration. I'm sure hockey people/players have long memories as concerns contractual issues and their perceived value to their respective teams

Edit: I always wonder about how much collusion is involved across the league in these particular types of circumstances. There is no way that there isn't a level of such in all pro sports. Yet it seems the NHL has done very well in keeping things under wraps as concerns this gigantus elephant in the room.
