Ok. In MLB I believe, the arbitrator must select one or the other.

I believe that as well.

Listen, PK's only worry is lining up his own pockets, Bergevin needs to think about this team long term, with Gallagher and Galchenyuk that are up for new contracts after next season, among others. Not PK's problem you will say, and I agree, but you can't fault Bergevin for trying to manage the cap situation the best he can. PK is RFA as far as I know, so he'll play here no matter what happens (unless he really wants to be a Richard about it and decides to stay home, but I doubt it). Worse case through arbitration is a one year contract, and they still have a chance to work out a deal long-term.

Of course, Bergevin could always give him a blank check and screw the team up salary cap wise like the other GMs do.

Look if MB can't manage the cap while keeping our best players then (frank) him and get someone in here who can. PK is different? He's money hungry? He's a member of a large club my friend.

They can pick a number between as well. Shea was asking for 8.5 at his arbitration case.

Unless the CBA was changed regarding arbitration the arbitrator can choose something in the middle. Just look at the Shea Weber case.

EDIT: realized you meant baseball. Carry on.

The only way any of this is remotely acceptable, is if it somehow results in us getting McDavid.
- ehabs9

He's from Toronto. Unlike Lindros who refused to wear a Nordiques jersey, McDavid refuses to wear anything but a Leafs jersey!!

Well it end up at 7.5 so it makes sense to use this example.

What if this current deal ends up being a short one and at the next round of negotiation there are still issues, at what point do people start turning on PK?

For all the love we have for him as a player, and all he does which makes him in appearance a nice person...maybe he is just a difficult person to deal with...maybe he isn't the person we all want/wish him to be.

- TouenneTiiTree

Maybe it's even simpler
Maybe PK just doesn't want to play here and he never planned on signing

I think he's managing pretty well since he got here.

We don't even know PK's demands and what the Habs offered long term.

I think people judge this situation a lot without having most of the relevant info.

That's one philosophy. Another is to pay your 2 superstars superstar money when it comes time that they get the leverage for a superstar contract, and you worry about the rest of the team when you have to. IE. Chicago recently with Kane/Toews. They didn't Richard those two around. They deserved big re-ups and they got them without any drama.

I'll say it again...

Cannot compare to Weber because he was signed under the previous CBA. So were Keith and Seabrook btw.

Bingo. I just think that MB would glady sign a 8x8 contract, PK... not too sure.

@TSNBobMcKenzie: MTL and Subban still free to negotiate a long-term contract up until the arbitrator's ruling comes down. But once ruling is down, that's it.

1. I asked you not to call me that.
2. Arbitration hearings aren't governed by one set of rules for the entire universe, John. This is a collectively bargained solution, and thus it's germane to the NHL and it's clubs and PA.

He's done great since he's been here.

But if any of this results in PK not being a Hab long term, he's (frank)ed up royally. Even if, on the long shot, PK doesn't want to be here long term (which seems extremely unlikely), his job is to work to make it happen anyways.

If being a GM just meant signing players who want to play here more than anywhere else, and only giving them the least amount of money you can, and (frank) em if not, anyone could do it.
