He's asking for 8.5 in arbitration. For 2 years.
Which would lead him to be UFA, asking for whatever the hell he wants at that moment.
He wouldn't sign for 8.5 long term is what I understand right now.

Whatever he's asking for this year is less than he's going to ask for next year or the year after that.
If he is asking for way too much money then using arbitration to buy time to get the maximum value for him isn't the end of the world. If they are trying to sign him long term going to arbitration is just going to make it a lot more difficult. (not impossible, but a lot more expensive).
